Hydrocarbon pollution is a widespread issue in both groundwater and surface-water systems; however, research on remediation at the interface of these two systems is limited. This interface is the oxic-anoxic boundary, where hydrocarbon pollutant from contaminated groundwaters flows into surface waters and iron mats are formed by microaerophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria. Iron mats are highly chemically adsorptive and host a diverse community of microbes.

Untreated wastewater entering the environment through leaking infrastructure and sewer overflows threatens both human and aquatic health. Water managers therefore need low cost, in situ methods to detect sewage contamination in real time to promptly employ mitigation strategies. However, wastewater has traditionally been identified in waterbodies using chemical and microbial tracers and indicators that can be non-unique to wastewater and often require complex and expensive analyses.

Historical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution was explored through the sedimentary records of three lakes: Huguangyan Maar Lake (HGY) in South China, Mayinghai Lake (MYH) in North China, and Sihailongwan Lake (SHLW) in Northeast China. In these three lakes, the PAH concentrations in sediments are still rising, showing the different trend to lakes in developed countries. PAH pollution in South China occurred from 1850, much earlier than the increases since 1980 observed in North and Northeast China.

Geological carbon capture and storage (CCS) can reduce anthropogenic CO emissions, but questions exist about impacts at the surface if CO leaks from deep storage reservoirs. To examine potential impacts on soils, previous studies have investigated the geochemistry and microbiology of volcanic soils hosting high fluxes of CO rich gas. This study builds on those previous investigations by considering impacts of CO leakage at a non-volcanic site, where deep geogenic CO leaks from a cracked well casing.
