Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) is a protein kinase that links integrins and growth factors to a range of signalling pathways. ILK expression and activity are increased in a variety of human cancers. However, little is known regarding the role of ILK in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). In this study, we assessed the expression of ILK in samples of human MPM, and compared it with the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Thirty-four samples of human malignant mesothelioma were stained with a polyclonal antibody against ILK. Two independent observers evaluated the morphological pattern and intensity of staining. The findings have been compared with the patient's characteristics. Most MPM and mesothelial cell proliferation samples (87.9%) showed cytoplasmic ILK staining of varying intensity. Normal mesothelial cells and normal lung parenchyma did not stain for ILK at all. Conversely, the percentage of positive EGFR staining was somewhat lower (75.8%). The ILK-positive patients were significantly older than the ILK-negative patients. Here we report for the first time that ILK is indeed expressed in malignant mesothelioma. For further validation of a causal association between ILK and neoplastic mesothelial transformation, these immunohistochemical results should be supplemented with clinical and molecular biological data.

A distinctive feature of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes is the waning of insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas. New methods for direct and specific targeting of the beta cells could provide platforms for delivery of pharmaceutical reagents. Imaging techniques such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) rely on the efficient and specific delivery of imaging reagents, and could greatly improve our understanding of diabetes etiology as well as providing biomarkers for viable beta-cell mass in tissue, in both pancreas and in islet grafts.

We have investigated the effect of length and chemical structure of phospholipid tails on the spontaneous formation of unilamellar liposomal vesicles in binary solute mixtures of cationic drug surfactant and zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine phospholipids. Binary drug surfactant-phospholipid mixtures with four different phospholipids with identical headgroups (two saturated phospholipids 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC, 14:0) and 1,2-Dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC, 16:0), and two unsaturated lipids 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC, 18:1) and 1,2-Dierucoyl-sn-Glycero-3-Phosphatidylcholine (DEPC, 22:1)) combined with two different tricyclic antidepressant drugs (amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMT) and doxepin hydrochloride (DXP)) have been investigated with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). We observe a conspicuous impact of phospholipid tail structure on both micelle-to-vesicle transition point and vesicle size.
