We report an improved transient response of an Er(3+) -doped fiber-optic amplifier with combined electronic feedforward (EFF) and optical feedback (OFB) control systems. We find, theoretically and experimentally, that the time delay of an EFF response leads to control instabilities in the form of erbium-doped fiber amplifier gain auto-oscillations, which can be suppressed by an appropriate choice of OFB wavelength and control system design.

A highly sensitive trace gas sensing system based on carbon black absorption enhanced photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy (PAS) is reported. A carbon black sheet and a fiber-optic cantilever microphone (FOCM) are integrated to form a fiber-optic cantilever spectrophone (FOCS). The gas concentration is obtained by measuring the acoustic wave amplitude generated by the carbon black sheet, which absorbs the laser passing through the interest gas.

An erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a single-mode fiber-no-core fiber-single-mode fiber (SMF-NCF-SMF) structure was constructed and experimentally demonstrated for label-free DNA hybridization measurement. The SMF-NCF-SMF structure acts as a sensing element and a filter to select the laser wavelength. The proposed fiber ring laser sensor exhibits a high optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR, >50 dB) and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM, <0.

In this paper, we demonstrated a novel bidirectional high-speed transmission system integrating a free-space optical (FSO) communication with a 5G wireless link, utilizing a high-power erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) for enhanced loss compensation. The system supports downlink rates of 1-Gb/s/4.5-GHz and 10-Gb/s at 24-GHz and 39-GHz, and an uplink rate of 10-Gb/s/28-GHz.

Laser-activated irrigation (LAI) of root canal systems depends on the generation of cavitation bubbles in the endodontic irrigant. Physical studies thus far focused on pulse energy, pulse length, frequency, and fiber tip shape, mostly in plain water. This study investigated the effect of endodontically relevant molecules (sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), and their combination) in water on physical properties of the resulting solution, and their impact on primary cavitation bubble features.
