Macroporous gel particles as robust macroporous matrices for cell immobilization.

Biotechnol J

Published: March 2008

A new design of robust matrices for cell immobilization is described. Macroporous gels (MGs) with immobilized microbial cells were prepared at subzero temperatures and were formed inside a plastic core (so-called, protective housing). Due to the protective housing the macroporous gel particles with immobilized cells can be used in well-stirred bioreactors. High retained activity of yeast (77-92%) and Escherichia coli (50-91%) cells immobilized in MGs after drying and storage in the dried state was due to the high structural stability and heterogeneous porous structure of the MGs.

Flexible Moisture-Driven Electricity Generators Based on Heterogeneous Gels and Carbon Nanotubes.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

College of Textile and Clothing Engineering, Soochow University, 199 Ren'ai Road, Suzhou 215123, China.

Recently developed asymmetric heterogeneous moisture-driven electricity generators (AHMEGs) are advantageous for harvesting energy from ubiquitous moisture due to their superior output performance and possible flexibility. However, the regeneration of AHMEG has seldom been explored. Here, we report the fabrication of flexible AHMEGs with regeneration ability simply by asymmetrically incorporating carbon nanotubes into a bilayer-structured gel with heterogeneities of both hygroscopicity and charge.

This work demonstrates the preparation of fast-swelling hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and tamarind xyloglucan (XG), utilizing freeze-drying to achieve an interconnected macroporous structure. Although XG is non-toxic and abundant, it has poor mechanical properties. Therefore, XG was mixed with PVA and crosslinked with citric acid (CA).

Tunable Bicontinuous Macroporous Cell Culture Scaffolds via Kinetically Controlled Phase Separation.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Macromolecular Engineering Laboratory, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, ETH Zurich, Zurich, 8092, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • 3D scaffolds provide a more natural environment for cell studies, but synthetic hydrogels often have limited pore sizes that restrict cell movement.
  • A new method using liquid-liquid phase separation creates macroporous hydrogels with adjustable pore sizes by controlling polymerization conditions like light intensity and hydrogel composition.
  • These macroporous gels, suitable for cell encapsulation, enhance cell spreading and migration, mimicking natural extracellular matrix (ECM) environments.

Synthesis of porous carbon xerogel adsorbents with tailored hierarchical porosity and morphology for the selective removal of sulfamethoxazole from water.

Materiales Polifuncionales Basados en Carbono (UGR-Carbon), Dpto. Química Inorgánica - Unidad de Excelencia de Química Aplicada a Biomedicina y Medioambiente - Universidad de Granada (UEQ-UGR), ES18071, Granada, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Pellet-type carbon xerogel adsorbents (CXCs) were created using a sol-gel process with resorcinol, formaldehyde, and CsCO as a catalyst, aimed at removing the pollutant sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from water.
  • The different R/Cs ratios used (100, 500, 1000, 2000) produced CXCs with varying porous structures; notably, CXCs100 had the highest adsorption capacity of 87.8 mg/g, but this capacity decreased with higher R/Cs ratios due to reduced pore volume.
  • CXCs500 was identified as the most efficient adsorbent with a good balance of adsorption capacity (72.0 mg/g)
