Rookies of the year: successfully orienting new graduate registered nurses to the cardiovascular surgical intensive care unit.

Crit Care Nurs Clin North Am

Cardiovascular Surgery Intensive Care Unit, Department of Nursing, Mayo Clinic, 1216 2nd Street SW, Rochester, MN 55902, USA.

Published: December 2007

The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the experience of one cardiovascular surgical ICU (CVSICU) orienting new graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) directly to critical care. The authors share a collective experience of interviewing, hiring, orienting, and retaining NGRN to a CVSICU. The formal orientation processes and the critical care training program, Essentials of Progressive and Intensive Care, are detailed. The nursing leadership roles of placement coordinator, nurse manager, nursing education specialist, and clinical nurse specialist in this process are identified. Lastly, opportunities for growth are examined.

Synthetic cytosine-phosphate-guanine oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODNs) are promising candidates for vaccine adjuvants, because they activate immune responses through the Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) pathway. However, unmodified CpG ODNs are quickly degraded by serum nucleases, and their negative charge hinders cellular uptake, limiting their clinical application. Our group previously reported that guanine-quadruplex (G4)-forming CpG ODNs exhibit enhanced stability and cellular uptake.

The South American Transcontinental Drainage Divide (TDD) is roughly oriented NE-SW from its Atlantic termination in SE Brazil to its NW termination in the limits between the southwestern edges of the Amazon Craton and the Andean Foreland. Based on a weak spatial coincidence with 90 - 70 Ma igneous intrusions, the origin and stability of the TDD have been attributed to intraplate magmatic activity. Using geomorphic analysis of drainage divides, we infer an overall southward migration of the TDD, even in areas with constrained uplift associated with intrusions.

Stable Field Emissions from Zirconium Carbide Nanoneedle Electron Source.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3255, USA.

In this study, a single zirconium carbide (ZrC) nanoneedle structure oriented in the <100> direction was fabricated by a dual-beam focused ion beam (FIB-SEM) system, and its field emission characteristics and emission current stability were evaluated. Benefiting from controlled fabrication with real-time observation, the ZrC nanoneedle has a smooth surface and a tip with a radius of curvature smaller than 20 nm and a length greater than 2 μm. Due to its low work function and well-controlled morphology, the ZrC nanoneedle emitter, positioned in a high-vacuum chamber, was able to generate a single and collimated electron beam with a current of 1.

Microdifferential Pressure Measurement Device for Cellular Microenvironments.

Bioengineering (Basel)

December 2024

Fusion Oriented Research for Disruptive Science and Technology, Japan Science and Technology Agency, 5-3, Yonbancho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 102-8666, Japan.

Mechanical forces influence cellular proliferation, differentiation, tissue morphogenesis, and functional expression within the body. To comprehend the impact of these forces on living organisms, their quantification is essential. This study introduces a novel microdifferential pressure measurement device tailored for cellular-scale pressure assessments.

A series of Ni complexes bearing a redox and acid-base noninnocent tetraamido macrocyclic ligand, H-(TAML-4) {H-(TAML-4) = 15,15-dimethyl-5,8,13,17-tetrahydro-5,8,13,17-tetraaza-dibenzo[]cyclotridecene-6,7,14,16-tetraone}, with formal oxidation states of Ni, Ni, and Ni were synthesized and characterized structurally and spectroscopically. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of the Ni complexes revealed a square planar geometry, and the [Ni(TAML-4)] complex with the formal oxidation state of Ni was characterized to be [Ni(TAML-4)] with the oxidation state of the Ni ion and the one-electron oxidized TAML-4 ligand, TAML-4. The Ni oxidation state and the TAML-4 radical cation ligand, TAML-4, were supported by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations.
