The critical halogen-bonding motif (CBr...BrCu) is responsible for the successful synthesis of three-dimensional networks of unusual 4,5-connected dodecahedron cells (each containing the encapsulated cation) via the self-assembly of tetra-n-propylammonium dibromocuprate(I) and tetrabromomethane as prototypical donor/acceptor dyads.

We explore the halogen bond acceptor potential of the isothiocyanate sulfur atom in the synthesis of cocrystals involving metal-organic building blocks by using Werner Ni(II) coordination compounds whose pendant isothiocyanate group enables halogen bonding. A series of 14 cocrystals involving octahedral Ni(L)(NCS) coordination compounds (L = pyridine or 4-methylpyridine) has been prepared by both crystallization from solution and liquid-assisted grinding. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated by the assembly of a large family of cocrystals involving five perfluorinated iodobenzenes.

Halogen-halogen interactions play a pivotal role in the formation and stability of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we investigate the assembly dynamics and dissociation pathways of linear supramolecular polymers based on pillar[5]arene-mediated by guest halogen-halogen interactions (C-X × X-C) in both the solution and solid states. The structure of the solid-state supramolecular assembly was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

The fabrication of materials that can switch between circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals is both essential and challenging. Here, two new halogen-bonded fluorescent molecular photoswitches, namely, HB-switch 1 and HB-switch 2, containing α-cyano-substituted diarylethene compounds with different end groups were developed. Upon exposure to specific UV or visible light wavelengths, they exhibited controllable and reversible Z/E photoisomerization.

Organic frameworks face a trade-off between the framework stability and the bond dynamics, which necessitates the development of innovative linkages that can generate stable frameworks without hindering efficient synthesis. Although iodine(I)-based halogen-bonded organic frameworks (XOFs) have been developed, constructing XOFs based on bromine(I) is desirable yet challenging due to the high sensitivity of bromine(I) species. In this work, we present the inaugural construction of stable bromine(I)-bridged two-dimensional (2D) halogen-bonded organic frameworks, XOF(Br)-TPy-BF/OTf, based on sensitive [N⋅⋅⋅Br⋅⋅⋅N] halogen bonds.

Halogen bonding acknowledged as a noteworthy weak interaction, has gained growing recognition in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In this study, we selected structurally rigid diaryliodonium ions (I(III)) with two biaxial σ-holes as halogen-bond donors, to bind with three chiral acceptor molecules bearing cholesteryl and naphthalimides with distinct geometries. The abundant carbonyl oxygen atoms in side-arm substituents function as multiple acceptors for halogen bonding.
