We investigated the effect of several chlorinated organic solvents on antigen-induced histamine release and inflammatory mediator production. Non-purified rat peritoneal mast cells (NPMC) and rat basophilic leukemia (RBL-2H3) cells were sensitized with anti-dinitrophenol (DNP) monoclonal IgE antibody, and then stimulated with DNP-conjugated bovine serum albumin (DNP-BSA) and several chlorinated organic solvents. Trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) enhanced histamine release from antigen-stimulated NPMC and RBL-2H3 in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, TCE and PCE increased IL-4 and TNF-alpha production from antigen-stimulated RBL-2H3. In an in vivo study, we investigated the effect of TCE and PCE on passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reaction. TCE and PCE enhanced PCA reaction markedly. These results suggest that TCE and PCE increase histamine release and inflammatory mediator production from antigen-stimulated mast cells via the modulation of immune responses. In addition, exposure to TCE and PCE may lead to the augmentation of allergic diseases.

In this study, electrochemical dechlorination and detoxification of a mixture of chlorinated ethylenes was investigated under various conditions using a double monoatomic synergistic metal catalytic cathode. Electrocatalytic degradation of mixed chlorinated with stepwise voltage and alternating current exhibited excellent dechlorination efficiency. The removal ratios of 1,2-dichloroethylene (1,2-DCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) reached 78.

Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation (EISB) using Emulsified Vegetable Oil (EVO) as a long-term electron donor has gained prominence for the treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated ethenes (CEs). This study explores the potential of isotopic and molecular biology tools (MBT) to investigate the CEs (PCE, TCE and cis-DCE) bioremediation using EVO in a contaminated site. A multiple approach using C and Cl-CSIA, quantification of Dehalococcoides (Dhc) and specific reductive dechlorination (RD) gene population, and hydrochemical data in microcosm experiments and field samples was applied.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is a widely utilized volatile chemical in industrial applications, including dry cleaning and metal degreasing. Exposure to PCE potentially presents a significant health risk to workers as well as communities near contamination sites. Adverse health effects arise not only from PCE, but also from PCE degradation products, such as trichloroethylene (TCE) and vinyl chloride (VC).

Background: Pollutants including metals/metalloids, nitrate, disinfection byproducts, and volatile organic compounds contaminate federally regulated community water systems (CWS) and unregulated domestic wells across the United States. Exposures and associated health effects, particularly at levels below regulatory limits, are understudied.
Objective: We described drinking water sources and exposures for the California Teachers Study (CTS), a prospective cohort of female California teachers and administrators.
