Introduction: Enamel decalcification is a potential problem that can compromise the esthetic results of orthodontic treatment. Patient compliance with preventive measures is frequently inadequate to resolve this issue. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of sealing around the bracket periphery in reducing decalcification.
Methods: Sixty extracted teeth were collected and randomized to 4 groups: group 1, bonded and then sealed around the bracket with an unfilled sealant material; group 2, bonded and then sealed with a filled, flowable composite material; group 3, bonded and sealed with excess bracket adhesive contoured at bracket periphery; and group 4, conventional treatment with excess bonding material removed and no additional protection at the bracket periphery. Each group was subjected to mechanical, thermal, and decalcification challenges to simulate in-vivo conditions.
Results: Groups 1 and 2 had the lowest incidence of decalcification; however, decalcification was not statistically significantly reduced by the use of an additional restorative/bracket adhesive material. An incidental finding was a statistically significant loss of bracket adhesive material beneath the bracket pads of group 4.
Conclusions: Prophylactic sealing around the orthodontic bracket pad periphery with an unfilled sealant or a filled flowable composite restorative material did not significantly reduce the incidence of decalcification.

Objectives: White spot lesions are one of the most common side effects of orthodontic therapy with a multibracket appliance and may indicate a preliminary stage of caries, also known as initial caries. Several approaches may be utilized to prevent these lesions, such as reducing bacterial adhesion in the area surrounding the bracket. This bacterial colonization can be adversely affected by a number of local characteristics.

Significance: Horizontal visual field extension was assessed for red and white stimuli in subjects with protanopia using semi-automated kinetic perimetry. In contrast to a conventional anomaloscope, the "red/white dissociation ratio" (RWR) allows to describe protanopia numerically. For the majority of subjects with protanopia a restriction for faint red stimuli was found.

Objective: This in-vitro study evaluated the color changes in enamel and dentin bleached in the presence of an orthodontic bracket, as well as the heterogeneity of the color and contribution of each tissue to the color change (CTCC).
Materials And Methods: Enamel-dentin specimens from extracted bovine teeth were bleached before or after bracket removal or maintained without any treatment (control). The colors of the dentin and enamel were measured individually and after recombining these substrates.

Objectives: The aim of this in-vitro study was to investigate the efficacy of four preventive measures against enamel demineralization and to compare the suitability of microhardness (MH) measurements and confocal laser microscopy (CLSM).
Materials And Methods: A total of 80 teeth were randomly allocated into four groups. The effect against demineralization of two coating materials (group 1: resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cement varnish (ClinproXT); group 2: composite sealant (ProSeal)) and that of two types of bracket-bonding material (group 3: amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) composite (AegisOrtho); group 4: RMGI (FujiOrthoLC)) was compared after pH-cycling by MH and CLSM.

Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to consecutively determine the effect of three bonding agents on the prevention of enamel demineralisation at the bracket-periphery and to compare the suitability of micro-computed tomography (μCT) scans and quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) to detect changes within subsurface lesions.
Materials And Methods: The effect of a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGI) (Fuji Ortho LC), a compomer (Assure) and a composite (Transbond XT) on the prevention of enamel demineralisation at the bracket-periphery was examined. After 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of pH cycling, the teeth (N = 45) were examined by consecutive μCT scans and by using a customised QLF set-up.
