Silver-coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) disks were treated under different environmental conditions (including changes in parameters such as relative humidity (%RH) and SO(2)/H(2)S content) in atmospheres of synthetic air and pure N(2) for 24 h in a weathering chamber. The corroded surfaces were subjected to depth profiling by a time of flight (TOF) secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) instrument, equipped with a Bi(+) analysis gun and Cs(+) sputter gun. The evaluation of the in-depth distribution of several elements and species provides evidence for the formation of a corrosion layer containing Ag(2)SO(3), even in the absence of oxidizing agents, such as H(2)O(2) or NO(2). Furthermore it could be elucidated that the thickness of the formed Ag(2)SO(3) layer does not depend on the SO(2) concentration but rather on the humidity and oxygen content of the ambient atmosphere. In weathering experiments in atmospheres composed of synthetic air, humidity, and H(2)S, the presence of different oxygen species (surface and bulk) and silver sulfide could be detected by TOF-SIMS depth profiling experiments. The obtained results for both acidifying gases are in good correlation with the corresponding tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) investigations and in situ QCM measurements.

Soil and water pollution represent significant threats to global health, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Healthy soils underpin terrestrial ecosystems, supporting food production, biodiversity, water retention, and carbon sequestration. However, soil degradation jeopardizes the health of 3.

Integrating energy donor and acceptor chromophores as ligands within one MOF for advanced artificial photosynthesis is of great interest but appears to be a major challenge. Herein, via a simple one-pot synthetic strategy, an energy acceptor porphyrin ligand 5,15-di(p-benzoato)porphyrin (HDPBP) was successfully integrated into an energy donor 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (HNDC)-based MOF (UiO-66-NDC) to construct a mixed-ligand MOF, donated as UiO-66-NDC-HDPBP. Benefiting from the ample overlap between the emission spectrum of HNDC and the absorption spectrum of HDPBP, an efficient energy transfer (EnT) process from the donor HNDC to the acceptor HDPBP within UiO-66-NDC-HDPBP can occur and be captured by time-resolved spectroscopy.

Organic agriculture is expanding worldwide, driven by expectations of improving food quality and soil health. However, while organic certification by regulatory bodies such as the United States Department of Agriculture and the European Union confirms compliance with organic standards that prohibit synthetic chemical inputs, there is limited oversight to verify that organic practices, such as the use of authentic organic fertilizer sources, are consistently applied at the field level. This study investigated the elemental content of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) and their stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in seven different crops grown under organic or conventional practices to assess their applicability as a screening tool to verify the authenticity of organic labeled produce.

Sex pheromones mediate mate location in many animal taxa. Widow spider males are attracted to sex pheromones disseminating from female webs. Upon arrival on a web, males court in response to web-borne contact pheromone components.

This study reports methods for reductive microbial deuteration with a high degree of isotopic labelling, focusing on economical approaches using various yeast strains and inexpensive carbon sources. A strategy of α-hydrogen exchange followed by deuterative microbial reduction gave >95% backbone perdeuteration for crucial chiral building blocks for medicinal and analytical applications, without loss of the enantioselectivity demonstrated in the corresponding protiative processes. Under an air atmosphere, strain MBG5177 outperformed baker's yeast in the synthesis of (2-H)solketal, while strain X-33 provided >95% deuteration in the synthesis of the two studied building blocks using methanol- as an affordable carbon source.
