The field of microbiology traditionally focuses on studying microorganisms at the population level. Nevertheless, the application of single-cell level methods, including microfluidics and imaging techniques, has revealed heterogeneity within populations, making these methods essential to understand cellular activities and interactions at a higher resolution. Moreover, single-cell sorting has opened new avenues for isolating cells of interest from microbial populations or complex microbial communities.

We present a follow-on technique for the cyclic-immunofluorescence profiling of suspension particles isolated using dielectrophoresis. The original lab-on-chip technique ("cyc-DEP" [cyclic immunofluorescent imaging on dielectrophoretic chip]) was designed for the multiplex surveillance of circulating biomarkers. Nanoparticles were collected from low-volume liquid biopsies using microfluidic dielectrophoretic chip technology.

Chemically synthesized metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have been widely used as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates for monitoring catalytic reactions. In some applications, however, the SERS MNPs, besides being plasmonically active, can also be catalytically active and result in Raman signals from undesired side products. The MNPs are typically insulated with a thin (∼3 nm), in principle pin-hole-free shell to prevent this.
