Organic polymer semiconductors have unique electronic properties which make them attractive for use in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices fabricated using inexpensive manufacturing processes. In addition, novel chemical and biological sensors have been proposed which make use of the photophysical and electrical properties of conjugated polymer semiconducting films. The work described herein illustrates one such biosensing application by demonstrating successful immobilization of horseradish peroxidase enzyme onto a thin film of the semiconducting polymer MDMO-PPV. Validation of bound peroxidase activity is accomplished through the use of a substrate solution of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine and hydrogen peroxide, which yields a dark brown precipitate in the presence of peroxidase. Photometric measurements are used to derive a quantitative assay of bound peroxidase concentration. This work supports the feasibility of organic semiconducting polymer films as a biosensing platform in microelectronic sensor devices.

Unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) film resulting from chemically active surface state and huge volume fluctuation limits the development of Si-based anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a photo-initiated polypyrrole (PPy) coating is manufactured on Si nanoparticles to guide the in situ generation of PPy-integrated hybrid SEI film (hSEI). The hSEI film shows excellent structure stability and optimized component composition for lithium storage.

To solve the energy crisis and environmental issues, it is essential to create effective and sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. Traditional materials for energy conversion and storage however have several drawbacks, such as poor energy density and inadequate efficiency. The advantages of MOF-based materials, such as pristine MOFs, also known as porous coordination polymers, MOF composites, and their derivatives, over traditional materials, have been thoroughly investigated.

This study presents an efficient and environmentally sustainable synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles using a starch-mediated sol-gel approach. This method yields crystalline mesoporous ZnO NPs with a hexagonal wurtzite structure. The synthesized nanoparticles demonstrated remarkable multifunctionality across three critical applications.

We incorporated Espaloma forcefield parameterization into MoSDeF tools for performing molecular dynamics simulations of organic molecules with HOOMD-Blue. We compared equilibrium morphologies predicted for perylene and poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) with the ESP-UA forcefield in the present work against prior work using the OPLS-UA forcefield. We found that, after resolving the chemical ambiguities in molecular topologies, ESP-UA is similar to GAFF.

Organic solar cells have seen significant progress in the past 2 decades with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding 20% but mostly based on high-cost photovoltaic materials. Polythiophenes (PTs) without a fused-ring structure are good candidates as low-cost donor materials, deserving more attention for studying. In this work, ester-substituted thiazole (E-Tz) was explored as the electron-withdrawing unit to design PTs, and further optimization on the fluorinated/nonfluorinated donor segment contents via copolymerization strategy was simultaneously performed, yielding polymer donors of PTETz-100F, PTETz-80F, and PTETz-0F.
