Aim: Romania is currently facing a prolonged measles outbreak. The aim of the study was to analyse the circulating human measles virus (HMV) strains by combining whole genome sequencing (WGS) with phylogenetic analysis, with a focus on the haemagglutinin gene.
Methods: We conducted an observational study in the first five months of 2024, in which 168 patients diagnosed with measles were randomly included.

In 2015, the 62nd session of the Regional Committee [RC] of the Eastern Mediterranean Region [EMR] endorsed the Eastern Mediterranean Vaccine Action Plan 2016-2020 (EMVAP) that included postponement of the measles elimination target to before 2020. However, the EMR does not have a regional rubella control or elimination goal. We reviewed the progress of measles and rubella surveillance in context of measles elimination in the Eastern Mediterranean Region during 2019-2022.

Objective: To document and compare risk factors and control measures for the largest measles outbreaks in the post-elimination era in the Region of the Americas.
Methods: Description of risk factors such as vaccination coverage, notification rate of suspected cases, measles incidence, and a summary of control measures for major measles outbreaks in six countries from 2017 to 2023. The analysis also includes a review of outbreak characteristics (time, place, and person).

Introduction: Measles is caused by the highly infectious measles virus, MeV, for which there is an effective vaccine. Monitoring of progress of measles elimination requires enhanced surveillance and tracking of MeV strains, including documenting the absence of an endemically circulating strain. Due to a reduction in the number of circulating genotypes, additional sequence information, beyond the standardized 450 nucleotide window of the nucleoprotein (N450), is required to corroborate the information from epidemiological investigations and, ideally, fill in gaps in the surveillance data.

Measles is vaccine-preventable extremely contagious disease caused by the measles virus. High vaccination coverage is needed to prevent outbreaks of disease. Although molecular surveillance of measles is critical to characterize outbreaks and track viral evolution, few whole-genome sequences of measles virus from West Africa are available despite continual outbreaks in the region.
