This paper reviews some aspects of nonlinear model building from data with (gray box) and without (black box) prior knowledge. The model class is very important because it determines two aspects of the final model, namely (i) the type of nonlinearity that can be accurately approximated and (ii) the type of prior knowledge that can be taken into account. Such features are usually in conflict when it comes to choosing the model class. The problem of model structure selection is also reviewed. It is argued that such a problem is philosophically different depending on the model class and it is suggested that the choice of model class should be performed based on the type of a priori available. A procedure is proposed to build polynomial models from data on a Poincaré section and prior knowledge about the first period-doubling bifurcation, for which the normal form is also polynomial. The final models approximate dynamical data in a least-squares sense and, by design, present the first period-doubling bifurcation at a specified value of parameters. The procedure is illustrated by means of simulated examples.

Background: The CREST intervention included three components one of which was an eight-week exercise programme. The aim of the programme was to increase the exercise capacity of people with mild to moderate dementia and facilitate social engagement with volunteer older adults from the community supporting a person with dementia, raising awareness and understanding of dementia. We explore the experience of volunteer older adults' participation in the exercise component of the CREST intervention following a five-hour training on dementia awareness and the CREST exercise programme.

Nonetheless, intubation and mechanical ventilation are increasing over time without concurrent trends in improved survival, including among those with advanced dementia. A better understanding of prehospital decision-making about intubation for people with dementia will guide efforts to increase goal-concordant care at onset of critical illness.

The purpose of this study was to produce metabolite-specific T and concentration maps in a clinically compatible time frame. A multi-TE 2D MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) experiment (multi-echo single-shot MRSI [MESS-MRSI]) deployed truncated and partially sampled multi-echo trains from single scans and was combined with simultaneous multiparametric model fitting. It was tested in vivo for the brain in five healthy subjects.

Care Partners (family and friends) providing direct care to people living with dementia are 1.6 times more likely to report distress if the person they are supporting is experiencing behaviour changes according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. These carers are a critical part of the care team and yet they are often not provided education needed to support high quality care and more effectively contribute to the care team.

Background: Familial Alzheimer's disease research necessitates innovative methodologies to disentangle the intricate relationships between genetic factors and neuroimaging measures. Traditional frequentist approaches, often hampered by small sample sizes in this population and challenges in incorporating prior knowledge transparently, may limit the robustness of findings.
Methods: We analyzed neuroimaging data of preclinical PSNE1 single mutation carriers, utilizing the software JASP to test effects of carrier status on measures of basal forebrain functional connectivity using both frequentist and Bayesian approach.
