Reconstruction of large anterior mandibular defects is a challenging task. The condition can become even more complex if primary reconstruction fails, leading to loss of the entire midline portion of the lower face with massive scarring of the remaining tissues. Bone transport distraction osteogenesis can provide a viable treatment option for these patients. One of such cases will be presented, followed by a discussion of the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the technique.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with limited effective treatment strategies. Endogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) give rise to neurons and glial cells throughout life. However, NSCs are more likely to differentiate into glial cells rather than neurons at the lesion site after TBI and the underlying molecular mechanism remains largely unknown.

Introduction: Modeling multi-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) time-series is a challenging tasks, even for the most recent deep learning approaches. Particularly, in this work, we targeted our efforts to the high-fidelity reconstruction of this type of data, as this is of key relevance for several applications such as classification, anomaly detection, automatic labeling, and brain-computer interfaces.

Methods: We analyzed the most recent works finding that high-fidelity reconstruction is seriously challenged by the complex dynamics of the EEG signals and the large inter-subject variability.

Causal Discovery with Generalized Linear Models through Peeling Algorithms.

J Mach Learn Res

January 2024

Division of Biostatistics, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA.

This article presents a novel method for causal discovery with generalized structural equation models suited for analyzing diverse types of outcomes, including discrete, continuous, and mixed data. Causal discovery often faces challenges due to unmeasured confounders that hinder the identification of causal relationships. The proposed approach addresses this issue by developing two peeling algorithms (bottom-up and top-down) to ascertain causal relationships and valid instruments.

Total eyebrow reconstruction with a free superficial temporal artery flap: A case report.

JPRAS Open

March 2025

Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, Tra Vinh University, Tra Vinh, Vietnam.

The eyebrow plays a crucial role in facial aesthetics and expression. Reconstructing an eyebrow defect remains a challenge due to the unique characteristics of eyebrow hair. While various advanced methods exist, we report the first documented use of a free superficial temporal artery flap for total eyebrow reconstruction.

Objectives: Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging can overcome the limitations of conventional two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound imaging in structural observation and measurement. However, conducting volumetric ultrasound imaging for large-sized organs still faces difficulties including long acquisition time, inevitable patient movement, and 3D feature recognition. In this study, we proposed a real-time volumetric free-hand ultrasound imaging system optimized for the above issues and applied it to the clinical diagnosis of scoliosis.
