We report the 4th case of a primitive round cell sarcoma with the translocation (4;19)(q35;q13.1) as the primary cytogenetic abnormality. This undifferentiated sarcoma shows some features of Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET), including a diffuse reactivity for FLI1, but it shows only focal and weak reactivity for CD99 and is negative for a rearrangement of EWS, the molecular signature of ES/PNET. Recognition of the histopathologic and cytogenetic features of this entity is necessary to avoid its misdiagnosis as ES/PNET, especially in small biopsy samples.

Article Synopsis
  • Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCTs) are rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcomas primarily found in the gastrointestinal tract, believed to stem from mesenchymal stem cells.
  • Diagnosing DSRCTs is challenging due to their similarity to other tumors, requiring the use of immunohistochemical staining and molecular analysis for accurate identification.
  • Their prognosis varies based on tumor location and stage, often necessitating a multidisciplinary treatment approach that may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Many modern cryptographic primitives for hashing and (authenticated) encryption make use of constructions that are instantiated with an iterated cryptographic permutation that operates on a fixed-width state consisting of an array of bits. Often, such permutations are the repeated application of a relatively simple round function consisting of a linear layer and a non-linear layer. These constructions do not require that the underlying function is a permutation and they can plausibly be based on a non-invertible transformation.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are a family of poorly differentiated malignant neoplasms of neuroectodermal origin. According to the location of origin, PNETs could be further categorized as central or peripheral. Peripheral PNET (pPNET) is an uncommon type that accounts for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas and occurs outside the central and sympathetic nervous systems.

Purpose: Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, rapidly growing pigmented neoplasm originating from the neural crest. Predominantly affecting infants, it commonly occurs in the head and neck region. MNTI is often locally aggressive with a high recurrence rate.

Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma (EES) is a rare form of Ewing's sarcoma that arises outside the bones in soft-tissue structures. It is thought to result from a genetic abnormality involving the fusion of the EWSR1 gene with various partner genes, most commonly the FLI-1 gene. Common symptoms include pain, swelling, and sometimes a palpable mass at the site of the tumor.
