Nanocomposites consisting of hydroxyapatite (HA) and a sodium maleate copolymer (maleic polyelectrolyte), synthesized by hydrothermal method and deposited on titanium substrates by Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) technique were tested for the biological properties. Coating bioanalysis was carried out by triple staining of actin, microtubules and nuclei followed by immunofluorescence microscopy. Within 24 h cells that occupied the biomaterial surface displayed the morphology and cytoskeleton pattern similar to the controls. Cells grown on nanocomposite coated surfaces had a higher proliferation rate than their counterparts grown on Ti coated with HA alone, indicating that maleic polyelectrolyte improved surface bio-adhesive characteristics. The capacity to induce cell attachment, spreading and proliferation demonstrated the potential of Ti coated with HA-polymer nanocomposites to be used as scaffolds in dental or orthopedic implantology.

In this work, a novel chitosan-based polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) was prepared using chitosan as the cationic polyelectrolyte, while a potassium salt of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-tetradecene) (PMA-14) served as the anionic counterpart. These PECs were used for the encapsulation of two nitroeugenol derivatives: 4-allyl-2-methoxy-6-nitrophenol () and 2-allyl-6-nitrophenol (). The results confirm complex formation and efficient encapsulation of active compounds.

Additive manufacturing (AM) holds great potential for processing natural polymer hydrogels into 3D scaffolds exploitable for tissue engineering and in vitro tissue modelling. The aim of this research activity was to assess the suitability of computer-aided wet-spinning (CAWS) for AM of hyaluronic acid (HA)/chitosan (Cs) polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hydrogels. A post-printing treatment based on HA chemical cross-linking via transesterification with poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEMA) was investigated to enhance the structural stability of the developed scaffolds in physiological conditions.

The conformational changes of poly(maleic anhydride--styrene) (PSMA) modified with different amino acids (PSMA-Aa) were studied in an aqueous medium as a function of ionic strength and pH. The specific viscosity of PSMA-Aa decreased with increasing salt concentration due to a more compact conformation. There was a decrease in surface tension with increasing concentrations of the modified polyelectrolyte having a greater effect for the PSMA modified with l-phenylalanine at pH 7.

This article reviews the synthesis of polyzwitterions (PZs) (poly-carboxybetaines, -phosphonobetaines, and -sulfobetaines) having multiple pH-responsive centers. The synthesis follows the Butler cyclopolymerization protocol involving a multitude of diallylammonium salts and their copolymerization with SO and maleic acid. The PZs have been transformed into cationic-, anionic-polyelectrolytes, and polyampholytes under the influence of pH.
