Introduction Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency that requires a timely and accurate diagnosis to prevent complications. Several laboratory markers have been assessed to improve the diagnostic accuracy of acute appendicitis, including C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC) count, and cytokines like interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. One less commonly used but potentially valuable marker is the mean platelet volume (MPV), which indicates the size of circulating platelets and has the potential to serve as a biomarker for inflammatory conditions.

Background: The platelet-albumin-bilirubin (PALBI) grade is a comprehensive assessment index of liver function. Liver dysfunction is a key determinant of the pathogenesis and resolution of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which affects the prognosis of patients.
Aims: To evaluate the association of PALBI grade with the risk of 30-day mortality in patients with ARDS.

Venous thromboembolism, characterized by deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is the third cardiovascular disease in the world. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in areas of impaired blood flow, and it is significantly affected by environmental factors. Local hypoxia, caused by venous stasis, plays a critical role in deep vein thrombosis under normal conditions, and this effect is intensified when the Po decreases, such as during air travel or high-altitude exposure.

Platelets are critical for blood clotting, with shear-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA) playing a key role in hemostasis and the prevention of excessive bleeding. SIPA function potentially leads to life-threatening diseases such as hemorrhage and myocardial infarction, which are leading causes of death globally. Point-of-care platelet function tests (POC PFTs) are developed to assess platelet dysfunction and distinguish between normal and abnormal platelet activity.
