Under standard culture conditions, tumor cells are exposed to 20% O(2), whereas the mean tumor oxygen levels within the tumor are much lower. We demonstrate, using low-passaged human tumor cell cultures established from glioma, that a reduction in the oxygen level in these cell cultures dramatically increases the percentage of CD133 expressing cells.

The ability to control the growth and orientation of neurites over long distances has significant implications for regenerative therapies and the development of physiologically relevant brain tissue models. In this study, the forces generated on magnetic nanoparticles internalised within intracellular endosomes are used to direct the orientation of neuronal outgrowth in cell cultures. Following differentiation, neurite orientation was observed after 3 days application of magnetic forces to human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells, and after 4 days application to rat cortical primary neurons.

Astrocytes participate in brain clearance of extracellular proteins and metabolites, through the activity of the water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4), which can be deregulated in stress-related disorders, impairing brain waste clearance. The present study investigates the impact of dexamethasone (Dexa), a synthetic glucocorticoid used as a simplified in vitro stress model, on astrocytic AQP4 and its modulation by adenosine A receptors (AR), which blockade reverses conditions related with maladaptive stress, such as anxiety and depression. The clearance of proteins in primary astrocytic cultures, assessed using 5 kDa FITC-dextran and 45 kDa TRITC-dextran uptake, was decreased by a 24 h exposure to 100 nM Dexa.

Background: Epidemiological studies associate an increase in breast cancer risk, particularly triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), with lack of breastfeeding.
