In order to shed light on the proton distributions and order/disorder in high-pressure delta-Al(OH)3 and delta-AlOOH phases, two-dimensional, high-resolution 1H CRAMPS (FSLG)-MAS NMR and 27Al 3QMAS NMR spectra have been obtained. For delta-Al(OH)3, the 1H CRAMPS-MAS NMR revealed two peaks with an intensity ratio close to 2:1. The 27Al MAS and 3QMAS NMR suggest a single Al site with a well-defined local structure. For delta-AlOOH, the 1H and 27Al NMR indicate the presence of a single H and Al site each. These results are consistent with crystal structures refined from X-ray diffraction. For comparison, 1H MAS and CRAMPS-MAS NMR spectra were also obtained for several other hydroxides/oxyhydroxides, including In(OH)3 and InOOH that have similar structures to delta-Al(OH)3 and delta-AlOOH, respectively. These data not only provide additional insights into the proton distributions in these important crystal structure classes but also together provide a better defined quantitative correlation between 1H chemical shift and hydrogen-bonding O...O distance.

Subducting sedimentary layer typically contains water and hydrated clay minerals. The stability of clay minerals under such hydrous subduction environment would therefore constraint the lithology and physical properties of the subducting slab interface. Here we show that pyrophyllite (AlSiO(OH)), one of the representative clay minerals in the alumina-silica-water (AlO-SiO-HO, ASH) system, breakdowns to contain further hydrated minerals, gibbsite (Al(OH)) and diaspore (AlO(OH)), when subducts along a water-saturated cold subduction geotherm.

The high-pressure phases of oxyhydroxides (δ-AlOOH, ε-FeOOH, and their solid solution), candidate components of subducted slabs, have wide stability fields, thus potentially influencing volatile circulation and dynamics in the Earth's lower mantle. Here, we report the elastic wave velocities of δ-(Al,Fe)OOH (Fe/(Al + Fe) = 0.13, δ-Fe13) to 79 GPa, determined by nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering.

At ambient pressure, the hydrogen bond in materials such as ice, hydrates, and hydrous minerals that compose the Earth and icy planets generally takes an asymmetric O-H···O configuration. Pressure significantly affects this configuration, and it is predicted to become symmetric, such that the hydrogen is centered between the two oxygen atoms at high pressure. Changes of physical properties of minerals relevant to this symmetrization have been found; however, the atomic configuration around this symmetrization has remained elusive so far.

A deep lower-mantle (DLM) water reservoir depends on availability of hydrous minerals which can store and transport water into the DLM without dehydration. Recent discoveries found hydrous phases AlOOH ( = 2) with a CaCl-type structure and FeOOH ( = 4) with a cubic pyrite-type structure stable under the high-pressure-temperature () conditions of the DLM. Our experiments at 107-136 GPa and 2,400 K have further demonstrated that (Fe,Al)OOH is stabilized in a hexagonal lattice.

The elastic constants of δ-AlOOH have been calculated for applied pressures in the range 0-40 GPa using three exchange-correlation functionals, i.e. PBEsol, TCAsol and PBE.
