1. Osmotic water movement across toad isolated hemibladders was measured by a gravimetric method. 2. The influence of carbamazepine, chlorpropamide and demeclocycline on the antidiuretic hormone (ADH)-induced water flow rate was examined. 3. No antidiuretic activity due to carbamazepine alone was observed but a slight inhibition due to ADH-induced water flow was observed in the presence of carbamazepine over a selected dose-range. This was unexpected and is inconsistent with data from in vivo studies in man. 4. Chlorpropamide potentiated ADH-induced water flow, in keeping with the hypothesis that chlorpropamide sensitizes the renal tubules to ADH-induced water flow. 5. Structural changes of the cytoplasm of urinary bladder granular cells after an antidiuretic hormone (ADH) stimulation of water transport were studied using standard and cryogenic methods of electron microscopy. Numerous changes occurred in these cells, the cytoplasm of the granular cells becoming swollen, and the intercellular spaces enlarged. Most granules become fused with the apical membrane.

In the present study we examined the effect of alpha-adrenergic regulation of active transepithelial Na+ absorption across the isolated frog skin epithelium. alpha-Adrenergic stimulation was achieved by addition of the adrenergic agonist noradrenaline in the presence of the beta-adrenergic blocker propranolol. alpha-Adrenergic stimulation inhibited basal as well as antidiuretic hormone (ADH)-stimulated Na+ transport.

Prior studies have emphasized foscarnet's proximal tubular toxicity, but there have been isolated reports of foscarnet-induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.
