I summarize my experience with scientific misconduct and breach of publication ethics during my 10 year term as Editor-in-Chief and my first 3 years as Scientific Integrity Advisor for Neurology, the official publication of the American Academy of Neurology. I describe in some detail the highly publicized, lengthy saga involving the accusation from a former colleague that James Abbs falsified data in an article published in Neurology. Nine years later, after numerous investigations and law suits, Abbs was found to have engaged in scientific misconduct which prompted the retraction of the article. Most of the problems I encountered were less complex and involved claims of plagiarism (regarded as "scientific misconduct") and self plagiarism (regarded as a "breach of publication ethics"). I conclude by providing helpful sources for editors in dealing with these infractions.

Scientific integrity has been increasingly challenged by scientific misconduct and paper mills, resulting in an increase in retractions. Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology has been significantly impacted by fraudulent submissions, resulting in numerous retractions. By analyzing retraction notes and utilizing a post-publication surveillance strategy, this editorial discusses how this journal continues to deal with problematic publications, uncovers image- and physiological-related integrity issues, and responds to fraudulent activity.

Connecting socially relevant topics with biological content can boost student engagement and comprehension. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an increasingly prevalent diagnosis with a number of intersecting topic areas between developmental biology and social justice. In this work, an electrochemical system combined with low-cost UV-LEDs was implemented for the inactivation of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The individual elimination of these bacteria was followed by plate counting and flow cytometry, as complementary techniques to establish the cell inactivation and non-viability, respectively. The contribution of the different parts of the disinfection system (anode, cathode, and light) was determined.

As shocking as He Jiankui's genetic experiment resulting in the world's first gene-edited babies may have been, a socioethical inquiry into this paradigmatic case of scientific misconduct reveals its deep roots in genetic and scientific nationalism, as manifested in the widely accepted practice of yousheng (superior birth or eugenics) in China and the country's authoritarian pursuit of science superpower status. Along with eugenics, bionationalism has long been an international phenomenon. A global sociobioethics or ethical transculturalism is thus necessary to adequately investigate the macrolevel sociopolitical, historical, and transnational forces, such as bionationalism, that structurally shape bioethical issues and people's responses to them, causing the systematic undermining of essential bioethical norms and the instrumentalization of human life.
