Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a pregnancy disorder associated with short- and long-term adverse outcomes in both mothers and infants. The current clinical test of blood glucose levels late in the second trimester is inadequate for early detection of GDM. Here we show the utility of Raman spectroscopy (RS) for rapid and highly sensitive maternal metabolome screening for GDM in the first trimester.

Background: Fetuin-A is implicated in the pathogenesis of vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the relationship between fetuin-A, histopathologic lesions and long-term kidney outcomes in patients with various types of kidney disease remains unclear.

Methods: We measured urinary fetuin-A levels in 335 individuals undergoing clinically indicated native kidney biopsy. The expressions of mRNA and protein in the kidney were assessed using RNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) has a high prevalence worldwide. Although the economic burden of depression increases annually, the proportion of patients with MDD receiving treatment did not increase between 2010 and 2018, suggesting an unmet treatment need. The burden of long-term treatment for depression is borne by patients.

Therapy for large-scale bone defects remains a major challenge in regenerative medicine. In this context, biodegradable electrospun nonwovens are a promising material to be applied as a temporary implantable scaffold as their fibre diameters are in the micro- and nanometre range and possess a high surface-to-volume ratio paired with high porosity. In this work, assessment of biodegradable PLLA--PEG nonwovens with fetuin A covalently anchored to the surface has been performed in terms of biomineralisation and the influence on MG-63 osteoblast cell metabolic activity, biosynthesis of type I collagen propeptide and inflammatory potential.

Background: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a major chronic liver disease around the world without successful treatment. Acute alcoholic hepatitis is one of the most severe forms of ALD with high mortality, which is often associated with binge drinking. Alcohol drinking dysregulates lipid metabolism, increases adipose tissue lipolysis, and induces liver steatosis and adipose tissue atrophy.
