A novel open-source cultivation system helps establish the first full cycle chemosynthetic symbiosis model system involving the giant ciliate .

Front Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, United States.

Symbiotic interactions drive species evolution, with nutritional symbioses playing vital roles across ecosystems. Chemosynthetic symbioses are globally distributed and ecologically significant, yet the lack of model systems has hindered research progress. The giant ciliate and its sulfur-oxidizing symbionts represent the only known chemosynthetic symbiosis with a short life span that has been transiently cultivated in the laboratory.

Advances in assessment and cognitive neurorehabilitation of HIV-related neurocognitive impairment.

Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) is present in around 40% of people with HIV and substantially affects everyday life, adherence to combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) and overall life expectancy. Suboptimal therapy regimen, opportunistic infections, substance abuse and highly prevalent psychiatric co-morbidities contribute to NCI in people with HIV. In this review, we highlight the need for efficacious treatment of HIV-related NCI through pharmacological approaches and cognitive neurorehabilitation, discussing recent randomized controlled trials in this domain.

The intersection of queer identity and psychedelics has not been thoroughly explored by the research community, historically or in the present day. With growing access to legal psychedelic therapies, it is essential that queer psychedelic experiences are understood sufficiently by clinicians in order to provide the most safe and effective care possible. Psychedelics and queerness are intricately related, and there is strong interest in the use of psychedelics for healing and identity development among queer populations.

Background: As modern industrial activities have advanced, the prevalence of microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment has increased, thereby impacting plant growth. Potassium is one of the most crucial nutrient cations for plant biology. Understanding how polyethylene terephthalate (PET) treatment affects potassium uptake will deepen our understanding of plant response mechanisms to plastic pollution.

Every Day I Write the Book: Transforming EHR Data from Daily Practice into New Knowledge.

From The Center for Professionalism & Value in Health Care, American Board of Family Medicine, Washington, DC (RLP); Research & Policy, American Board of Family Medicine, Washington, DC; and Center for Professionalism & Value in Health Care Washington, DC (AWB).

Despite producing mountains of data in the daily course of care, the documentation labors of frontline clinicians currently return very little value to them or to the health system. The potential of these painstakingly collected data are enormous and clinical registries can extract the extraordinary capacity of these data and transform them into research-ready datasets while protecting the confidentiality of the patients and clinicians. Clinical registries represent transformative tools for primary care research, bringing together the dimensions of clinical practice, research, quality improvement, and policy impact from a large, nationally reflective, diverse sample of practices and patients.
