Published: December 2007

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy develops rapidly into a powerful technique to image both the chemical composition and physical state in complex samples from biophysics, biology, and the material sciences. This nonlinear vibrational technique increases the signal relative to spontaneous Raman scattering and does not require labeling of the specimen. A theoretical description of the technique is provided and the two major modes of operation: picosecond- and multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering are discussed. The potential of the technique is demonstrated with examples of direct measurement of acyl chain order and orientation in lipid monolayers, bilayers, and lipid vesicles.

The importance of developing multifunctional nanomaterials for sensing technologies is increasing with the arrival of nanotechnology. In this study, we describe the introduction of novel nanoprobe electro-active material into the architecture of an electrochemical immuno-sensor. Based on the electrochemical immuno-sensor, functionalized tin oxide/graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite (fSnO/g-CN) was synthesized and then analyte specific anti-aflatoxin M monoclonal antibody (AFM-ab) combined to form an electro-active nanoprobe (fSnO/g-CN/AFM-ab).

Additively manufactured drug products, typically produced using small-scale, on-demand batch mode, require rapid and non-destructive quantification methods. A tunable modular design (TMD) approach combining porous polymeric freeze-dried modules and an additive manufacturing method, inkjet printing, was proposed in an earlier study to fabricate accurate and patient-tailored doses of an antidepressant citalopram hydrobromide. This approach addresses the unmet medical needs associated with antidepressant tapering.

Light-driven molecular rotary motors are nanometric machines able to convert light into unidirectional motions. Several types of molecular motors have been developed to better respond to light stimuli, opening new avenues for developing smart materials ranging from nanomedicine to robotics. They have great importance in the scientific research across various disciplines, but a detailed comprehension of the underlying ultrafast photophysics immediately after photo-excitation, that is, Franck-Condon region characterization, is not fully achieved yet.

Glutathione serves as a common biomarkers in tumor diagnosis and treatment. The levels of its intracellular concentration permit detailed investigation of the tumor microenvironment. However, low polarization and weak Raman scattering cross-section make direct and indirect Raman detection challenging.

Here we describe the synthesis and evaluation of a molecular corrosion sensor that can be applied in situ in aerospace coatings, then used to detect corrosion after the coating has been applied. A pH-sensitive molecule, 4-mercaptopyridin (4-MP), is attached to a gold nanoparticle to allow surface-enhanced Raman-scattering (SERS) for signal amplification. These SERS nanoparticles, when combined with an appropriate micron-sized carrier system, are incorporated directly into an MIL-SPEC coating and used to monitor the process onset and progression of corrosion using pH changes occurring at the metal-coating interface.
