Iridium was sputtered as the top layer of stimulation electrodes. The coatings were varied in their morphology by adjusting the total deposition pressure and the working distance (WD) of target and substrate. It is shown that the resulting different kinds of morphologies have a strong influence on stimulation characteristics. The combination of high working gas pressure and small WD as well as the combination of medium working gas pressure and larger WD yield the best characteristics on macro-sized test electrodes.

Stability of sputtered iridium oxide neural microelectrodes under kilohertz frequency pulsed stimulation.

Article Synopsis
  • Kilohertz (kHz) frequency stimulation is being explored as a neuromodulation therapy for chronic pain, focusing on its effects on microelectrode materials.
  • The study evaluated sputtered iridium oxide film (SIROF) microelectrodes' electrochemical stability under pulsed electrical stimulation between 1.5-10 kHz and different charge densities.
  • Results indicated that higher frequencies increased electrode polarization, with bipolar configurations showing greater polarization than monopolar ones, while the microelectrodes maintained stable performance without major changes in electrochemical behavior even after multiple pulses.

Motivation: The clinical success of brain-machine interfaces depends on overcoming both biological and material challenges to ensure a long-term stable connection for neural recording and stimulation. Therefore, there is a need to quantify any damage that microelectrodes sustain when they are chronically implanted in the human cortex.

Methods: Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we imaged 980 microelectrodes from Neuroport arrays chronically implanted in the cortex of three people with tetraplegia for 956-2246 days.

In the wafer-scale growth of Ir(001) on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) by magnetron sputtering epitaxy two kinds of {111} oriented domains are observed. One consists of sharp 'fjord'-shaped features in which four 90° alternated rotational variants of {111} are possible and the second one consists of islands with less defined shapes in which eight 45° alternated rotational variants can be found. Their formation occurs directly at the Ir/YSZ interface along incoherent grain boundaries, likely nucleating at local defects of the YSZ surface.

Chronic implantation of intracortical microelectrode arrays (MEAs) capable of recording from individual neurons can be used for the development of brain-machine interfaces. However, these devices show reduced recording capabilities under chronic conditions due, at least in part, to the brain's foreign body response (FBR). This creates a need for MEAs that can minimize the FBR to possibly enable long-term recording.

Retinal prosthetics offer partial restoration of sight to patients blinded by retinal degenerative diseases through electrical stimulation of the remaining neurons. Decreasing the pixel size enables increasing prosthetic visual acuity, as demonstrated in animal models of retinal degeneration. However, scaling down the size of planar pixels is limited by the reduced penetration depth of the electric field in tissue.
