The typical situations found in in situ gamma spectrometry have been simulated by Monte Carlo techniques to obtain the energy spectra of the photon fluence rate existing at 1 m above ground. The main difficulty found with the model is its slow convergence. A method to speed up the calculation has been derived. The results of the model have been thoroughly tested against existing data. In a final stage, the specific activity to H*(10) conversion coefficients have been derived for the typical scenarios encountered in the in situ gamma spectrometry.

In-line tempering eliminates the domain boundary in perovskite single crystals for high-energy resolution ionizing radiation detectors.

Sci Adv

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun 130012, P. R. China.

Metal halide perovskite single crystals (SCs) emerge as a promising candidate for ionizing radiation detection. The realization of top-performing radiation detectors typically relies on careful crystal selection from broad candidate groups, as residual strain remains unavoidable during the SC growth process, which often leads to the formation of ferroelastic domains with varied orientations. Here, we introduce an in-line tempering strategy to alleviate microstrain and homogenize the domain orientation across methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI) perovskite SCs.

Operando Observation of Electrically Triggered Phase Transition in Thin CuS Crystal.

Nano Lett

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan 430070, China.

CuS has been identified as a functional material of memristors with multilevel resistance switching. However, as the migration of Cu ions under the electric field is tangled with defect evolution and phase transition, the electroresistance mechanism of CuS remains largely unclear. Here, the electrically triggered phase transition was studied by transmission electron microscopy.

A novel and highly efficient Pd-catalyzed approach for the synthesis of bis-heterocycles featuring both isoxazoline and methyleneindole motifs is demonstrated. The in situ formation of vinyl Pd(II) species through an alkyne-tethered carbamoyl chloride cyclization is crucial, and the innovative Pd-catalyzed carboetherification of β,γ-unsaturated oximes with vinyl Pd(II) species has been developed. This method is not only operationally straightforward but also exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance.

Hydrogel nanocomposites that respond to external stimuli and possess switchable electrical properties are considered as emerging materials with potential uses in electrical, electrochemical, and biological devices. This work reports the synthesis and characterization of thermo-responsive and electroconductive hydrogel nanocomposites based on poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) and gold nanoparticles (nanospheres-AuNPs and nanorods-AuNRs) using two different synthetic techniques. Method I involved γ-irradiation-induced crosslinking of a polymer matrix (hydrogel), followed by radiolytic formation of gold nanoparticles, while Method II included the chemical synthesis of nanoparticles, followed by radiolytic formation of a polymer matrix around the gold nanoparticles.

Fecal microbiota transplantation has been vital for establishing whether host phenotypes can be conferred through the microbiome. However, whether the existing microbial ecology along the mouse gastrointestinal tract can be recapitulated in germ-free mice colonized with stool remains unknown. We first identified microbes and their predicted functions specific to each of six intestinal regions in three cohorts of specific pathogen-free mice spanning two facilities.
