This work reviews recent developments in the field of organic transformations on sigma-aryl organometallic complexes. The general notion that M--C sigma bonds are kinetically labile, highly reactive, and incompatible with typical reaction conditions met in organic synthesis has limited the use of these synthetic strategies thus far. However, organic transformations on metal-bound sigma-aryl fragments are being used more and more by chemists in both industry and academia. In this Review, emphasis is put on the synthetic methods applied in this field up to now. The simplicity and generally good yields of these methods are very attractive for the construction of functionalized organometallic building blocks that are potentially useful as photochemical molecular devices, biosensors and -conjugates, or molecular switches. Thus, this Review has been tailored for a broader audience with the aim of encouraging the application of these strategies.

The formation of non-ion conducting byproducts on zinc anode is notoriously detrimental to aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Herein, we successfully transform a representative detrimental byproduct, crystalline zinc hydroxide sulfate (ZHS) to fast-ion conducting solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) via amorphization and fluorination induced by suspending CaF nanoparticles in dilute sulfate electrolytes. Distinct from widely reported nonhomogeneous organic-inorganic hybrid SEIs that exhibit structural and chemical instability, the designed single-phase SEI is homogeneous, mechanically robust, and chemically stable.

N-oxide-Functionalized Bipyridines as Strong Electron-Deficient Units to Construct High-Performance n-Type Conjugated Polymers.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Key Laboratory of Functional Molecular Solids, Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Anhui Normal University, No.189, Jiuhua South Road, Wuhu, Anhui, 241002, China.

Developing low-cost unipolar n-type organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) is necessary for logic circuits. To achieve this objective, the usage of new electron-deficient building blocks with simple structure and easy synthetic route is desirable. Among all electron-deficient building units, N-oxide-functionalized bipyridines can be prepared through a simple oxidized transformation of bipyridines.

Viedma deracemization mechanisms in self-assembly processes.

Laboratoire Softmat, UMR au CNRS no 5623, Université Paul Sabatier, F-31062 Toulouse, France.

Simulations on an ODE-based model shows that there are many common points between Viedma deracemization and chiral self-assemblies of achiral building blocks towards chiral nanoparticles. Both systems occur in a closed system with energy exchange but no matter exchange with the surroundings and show parallel reversible growth mechanisms which coexist with an irreversible cluster breaking (grinding). The various mechanisms of growth give rise to the formation of polymerization/depolymerization cycles while the consecutive transformation of achiral monomer into chiral cluster results into an indirect enantioselective autocatalysis.

We demonstrate the application of mechanochemistry in the synthesis of indolone-based photoswitches (hemiindigos, hemithioindigos, and oxindoles) via Knoevenagel condensation reactions. Utilizing ball-milling and an organic base (piperidine) acting as catalyst and solvent for liquid assisted grinding (LAG) conditions, we achieve rapid, solvent-free transformations, obtaining a set of known and previously unreported photoswitches, including highly functional amino acid-based photoswitches, multichromophoric derivatives and photoswitchable cavitands based on resorcin[4]arenes. The reaction under mechanochemical conditions gives moderate-to-high yields and is highly stereoselective leading to Z-isomers of hemiindigos and hemithioindigos and E-isomers of oxindoles.

Functionalization of Polymer Surfaces for Organic Photoresist Materials.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Tokyo Electron America, Inc., 2400 Grove Blvd., Austin, Texas 78741, United States.

Photoresists are thin film materials designed to transform an optimal image into a mechanical mask. Diverse exposure techniques such as photolithography induce modifications in the exposed areas that result in solubility changes that can then be selectively removed with appropriate agents (developers). Photoresist materials need to keep pace with the increasingly demand for feature size reduction.
