Rather than a unitary value, individuals may represent health risk as a fuzzy entity that permits them to make a number of specific possible estimates. Comparative optimism might be explained by people flexibly, using such a set to derive optimistic risk estimates. Student participants were asked to rate the likelihood of eight harmful alcohol-related outcomes occurring to themselves and to an average student. Participants made either unitary estimates or estimates representing the upper and lower bounds of a set denoting 'realistic probability' estimates. Personal risk estimates were lower when they were made as unitary estimates than those calculated from the mid-points of the bounded estimates. Unitary estimates of personal risk made after the bounded estimates were lower than initial unitary estimates. There were no effects for estimates made with regard to the average student. Risk may be internally represented as a fuzzy set, and comparative optimism may exist partly because this set allows people the opportunity to make optimistic unitary estimates for personal risk within what they see as realistic parameters.

Gap junction (GJ) channels, formed of connexin (Cx) protein, enable direct intercellular communication in most vertebrate tissues. One of the key biophysical characteristics of these channels is their unitary conductance, which can be affected by mutations in Cx genes and various biochemical factors, such as posttranslational modifications. Due to the unique intercellular configuration of GJ channels, recording single-channel currents is challenging, and precise data on unitary conductances of some Cx isoforms remain limited.

Objective: Callous-unemotional traits (CU), characterized as a lack of guilt and empathy; and irritability, a tendency to show anger and frustration; are 2 risk factors for externalizing behavioral problems. Externalizing problems, CU and irritability are all heritable. However, there is a dearth of studies examining the genetic and environmental associations between the 3 domains.

Synergism of piezoelectricity and photocatalysis is an effective approach for pollutant degradation and removal, and has garnered considerable attention. Nonetheless, great challenges still remain in recombination and slow migration rate of charge carriers. For response, a novel Three-in-One strategy based on MXene/ZnS/FeO (MZF) was developed to enhance the piezoelectric photocatalytic activity via achieving a triple effect: Dual Schottky heterojunction, Interface electric field, and Oxygen vacancy.

Purpose: This study evaluates the Social Return on Investment (SROI) of implementing measures to prevent fragility fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (OP) in Spain.
Methods: A group of 13 stakeholders identified necessary actions for improving refracture prevention and assessed the investment required from the Spanish National Health System (SNHS), considering direct, indirect, and intangible costs over a one-year period. Unitary costs were sourced from scientific literature and official data, and intangible costs were estimated through surveys on women's willingness to pay for better health-related quality of life.

Many quantum algorithms rely on a quality initial state for optimal performance. Preparing an initial state for specific applications can considerably reduce the cost of probabilistic algorithms such as the well studied quantum phase estimation (QPE). Fortunately, in the application space of quantum chemistry, generating approximate wave functions for molecular systems is well studied, and quantum computing algorithms stand to benefit from importing these classical methods directly into a quantum circuit.
