High field magnetization and ESR measurements on the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnet BaCo(2)V(2)O(8) have been performed in magnetic fields up to 50 T along the chain. The experimental results are explained well in terms of a 1D S=1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model in longitudinal fields. We show that the quantum phase transition from the Néel ordered phase to the spin liquid one in the model is responsible for a peculiar order to disorder transition in BaCo(2)V(2)O(8).

Phase boundary is highly recognized for its capability in engineering various physical properties of ferroelectrics. Here, field-induced polarization rotation is reported in a high-performance (K, Na)NbO-based ferroelectric system at the rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary. First, the lattice structure is examined from both macroscopic and local scales, implementing Rietveld refinement and pair distribution function analysis, respectively.

The disordered phase of spinel LiMnNiO (LNMO) is more appealing as high-voltage cathode due to its superior electrochemical performance compared to its ordered counterpart. Various methods are developed to induce a phase transition. However, the resulting materials often suffer from capacity degradation due to the adverse influence of accompanying Mn ions.

The development of molecule-based switchable materials remains an important challenge in the field of molecular science. Achievement of a structural phase transition induced by adsorption/desorption of guest molecules in spin crossover (SCO) Co(II) compounds is of significant interest because of the possibility that the spin state of the magnetic anisotropic high-spin (HS, = 3/2) and low-spin (LS, = 1/2) states can be switched via the induced changes in associated intermolecular interactions. In this study, we demonstrated a reversible magnetic switching associated with spin state conversion, along with a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) phase transition induced by dehydration/rehydration.

Tuning the Electric Field Response of MOFs by Rotatable Dipolar Linkers.

Computational Materials Chemistry Group, Fakultät für Chemie und Biochemie, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Bochum 44801, Germany.

Recently the possibility of using electric fields as a further stimulus to trigger structural changes in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been investigated. In general, rotatable groups or other types of mechanical motion can be driven by electric fields. In this study we demonstrate how the electric response of MOFs can be tuned by adding rotatable dipolar linkers, generating a material that exhibits paraelectric behavior in two dimensions and dielectric behavior in one dimension.
