When a soft elastic cylinder is bent beyond a critical radius of curvature, a sharp fold in the form of a kink appears catastrophically at its compressed side while the tensile side remains smooth. The critical radius increases linearly with the diameter of the cylinder but remains independent of its material properties such as modulus; the maximum deflection at the location of the kink depends on both the material and geometric properties of the cylinder. The catastrophic dynamics of evolution of the kink depicts propagation of a shear wave from the location of the kink towards the edges signifying that kinking is an elastic response of the material which results in extreme localization of curvature. We have rationalized this phenomenon in the light of the classical Euler's buckling instability in slender elastic rods.

Purpose: To investigate long-term corneal biomechanical changes in thin corneas after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).
Methods: Patients with indications for SMILE were enrolled in this study between November 2017 and March 2018. Patients were matched for age, spherical diopter, cylinder, spherical equivalent (SE), and lenticule thickness (LT), and then categorized into the thin cornea group (preoperative thinnest central corneal thickness [CCT] of 500 µm or less, 32 eyes) or normal cornea group (CCT of greater than 500 µm, 32 eyes).

The hydraulic column is a core component in the coal mine support system, however, the real-time monitoring of the hydraulic column during the service process of the hydraulic support faces challenges. To address these issues, a high-precision stress mapping method of hydraulic column is proposed. The hydraulic column loss function was constructed to guide the data-driven model training, and the cylinder stress mechanism model was established by using the elastic-plastic theory of thick-walled cylinder.

The angular optical trap (AOT) is a powerful technique for measuring the DNA topology and rotational mechanics of fundamental biological processes. Realizing the full potential of the AOT requires rapid torsional control of these processes. However, existing AOT quartz cylinders are limited in their ability to meet the high rotation rate requirement while minimizing laser-induced photodamage.

Stretchable devices, garnering increasing attention as next-generation form factors, have a crucial problem in that vertical contraction occurs during stretching, causing image distortion of stretchable displays and discomfort in skin-attached devices. Previous structural strategies to mitigate vertical contraction, such as auxetic reentrants and wrinkles, suffer from the drawback that their structure becomes visible during stretching. In this study, this issue is addressed by unidirectionally aligning nanoscopic cylinders within block copolymer elastomer films.

Cells in the body are regularly subjected to mechanical forces that influence their biological fate in terms of morphology, gene expression, and differentiation. The current gold standard method to replicate these effects in vitro is to culture cells on devices with elastic substrates and to impart mechanical stretch using mechanical or pneumatic pull-push methods. Microfluidic device designs offer several advantages in this context for general uniform and controlled stretching.
