We report on an element-dependent critical size for argon physisorption at 80 K on transition-metal-doped silicon clusters. Argon does not attach to elemental silicon clusters but only to surface-located transition-metal atoms. Thus physisorption provides structural information. Specifically, the minimal cluster size for the formation of endohedral singly metal-doped silicon cages has been determined. The observed critical size for doubly doped silicon clusters indicates that larger caged molecules can be formed, eventually leading to the growth of metal-doped silicon nanorods.

Erbium-implanted silicon (Er:Si) holds promise for quantum networking, but the formation of multiple Er centers poses a challenge. We show that the cubic center (Er-C) has C or lower symmetry and propose all Er centers range between full Si- and full O-coordination. By co-implanting Si with Er and O (both 10cm) and increasing the thermal anneal quenching rate from ∼100 °C/s to ∼1000 °C/s, we shifted the dominant optically active center from ErO clusters to the Er-C center with mixed Si and O coordination.

This study evaluated a dual management approach to enhance plant-growth by improving soil fertility, reducing pathogenic stress using PGPR that affect phosphorus-transporter (pht) genes. Among 213 maize rhizobacterial isolates, 40 demonstrated the ability to solubilize tri-calcium phosphate, potassium, zinc, and silicon, showing various PGP traits. Nine of these isolates exhibited significant antagonistic activity against the plant pathogens Colletotrichum chlorophyti and Xanthomonas axonopodis.

Background: The detection of genetic sequences represents the gold standard procedure for species discrimination, genetic characterisation of tumours, and identification of pathogens. The development of new molecular detection methods, accessible and cost effective, is of great relevance. Biosensors based on plasmonic nanoparticles, such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), provide a powerful and versatile platform for highly sensitive, economic, user-friendly and label-free sensing.

Background: Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and tumour-derived extracellular vesicles (tdEVs) have great potential for monitoring therapy response and early detection of tumour relapse, facilitating personalized adjuvant therapeutic strategies. However, their low abundance in peripheral blood limits their informative value. In this study, we explored the presence of CTCs and tdEVs collected intraoperatively from a tumour-draining vein (DV) and via a central venous catheter (CVC) prior to tumour resection.

Self-assembled gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) possess distinctive properties that are highly desirable in diverse nanotechnological applications. This study meticulously explores the size-dependent behavior of Au-NPs under an electric field, specifically focusing on sizes ranging from 5 to 40 nm, and their subsequent assembly into 2D monolayers on an n-type silicon substrate. The primary objective is to refine the assembly process and augment the functional characteristics of the resultant nanostructures.
