Pharmaceutical salts are a cornerstone in drug development, offering a robust, economical, and industry-friendly option for improving the crucial physicochemical properties of drugs, particularly solubility and dissolution. This review article explores all critical aspects of salt formation, including its importance, the basic chemistry involved, the principles governing counterion selection, the range of counterions used, and the methods for preparing salts along with their advantages and limitations. Additionally, it explores analytical techniques for confirming salt formation and the different approaches various countries adopt in considering new salts as intellectual property.

We developed a facile one-pot method for fabricating physical gels consisting of ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) polymers and highly concentrated lithium salt electrolytes. We previously reported physical gels formed from the entanglement of UHMW polymers by radical polymerisation in aprotic ionic liquids. In this study, we found that the molecular weight of methacrylate polymers formed by radical polymerisation increased with the concentration of lithium salts in the organic solvents.

Background: Climate change and human activities have caused the drying of marine environments around the world. An example is the Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA which is at a near record low water level. Adverse health effects have been associated with exposure to windblown dust originating from dried lakebed sediments, but mechanistic studies evaluating the health effects of these dusts are limited.

Treatment with antibiotics is a major risk factor for infection, likely due to depletion of the gastrointestinal microbiota. Two microbiota-mediated mechanisms thought to limit colonization include the conversion of conjugated primary bile salts into secondary bile salts toxic to growth and competition between the microbiota and for limiting nutrients. Using a continuous flow model that simulates the nutrient conditions of the distal colon, we investigated how treatment with 6 clinically used antibiotics influenced susceptibility to infection in 12 different microbial communities cultivated from healthy individuals.
