Low- and high-frequency cochlear nonlinearity was studied by measuring distortion product otoacoustic emission input/output (DPOAE I/O) functions at 0.5 and 4 kHz in 103 normal-hearing subjects. Behavioral thresholds at both f2's were used to set L2 in dB SL for each subject. Primary levels were optimized by determining the L1 resulting in the largest L(dp) for each L2 for each subject and both f2's. DPOAE I/O functions were measured using L2 inputs from -10 dB SL (0.5 kHz) or -20 dB SL (4 kHz) to 65 dB SL (both frequencies). Mean DPOAE I/O functions, averaged across subjects, differed between the two frequencies, even when threshold was taken into account. The slopes of the I/O functions were similar at 0.5 and 4 kHz for high-level inputs, with maximum compression ratios of about 4:1. At both frequencies, the maximum slope near DPOAE threshold was approximately 1, which occurred at lower levels at 4 kHz, compared to 0.5 kHz. These results suggest that there is a wider dynamic range and perhaps greater cochlear-amplifier gain at 4 kHz, compared to 0.5 kHz. Caution is indicated, however, because of uncertainties in the interpretation of slope and because the confounding influence of differences in noise level could not be completely controlled.

Background: Escitalopram, a pharmacological compound, and crocin, the active compound of saffron, influence brain functions and serotonin levels. This study examined the efficacy of escitalopram with and without crocin in restoring the input-output (I/O) functions and long-term potentiation (LTP) within the hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) region of stressed rats.
Materials And Methods: Rats were divided into six groups: control (Co), sham (Sh), stress-recovery (St-Rec), stress-escitalopram (St-Esc), stress-crocin (St-Cr), and stress-escitalopram-crocin (St-Esc-Cr) groups.

Future processes and materials are needed to enable multichip packages with chip-to-chip (C2C) data rates of 50 GB/s or higher. This presents a fundamental challenge because of the skin effect, which exacerbates signal transmission losses at high frequencies. Our results indicate that smooth copper interconnects with relatively thin cuprous oxides (CuO, Cu) and amine-functional silane adhesion promoters improve interfacial adhesion with epoxy dielectrics by nearly an order of magnitude.

The mechanisms governing adipose tissue macrophage (ATM) metabolic adaptation during diet-induced obesity (DIO) are poorly understood. In obese adipose tissue, ATMs are exposed to lipid fluxes, which can influence the activation of specific inflammatory and metabolic programs and contribute to the development of obesity-associated insulin resistance and other metabolic disorders. In the present study, we demonstrate that the membrane ATP-binding cassette g1 (Abcg1) transporter controls the ATM functional response to fatty acids (FAs) carried by triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, which are abundant in high-energy diets.

In this study, several hydrogen-bonded arylamide foldamers (compounds 1-5) with the same degree of polymerization were designed and synthesized. The polyfluoroiodobenzene or iodoethynyl polyfluoroiodobenzene segment was modified as a halogen donor at the end of the monomer, and pyridine or pyridine oxynitride served as the corresponding halogen acceptor segment. The crystal structure of compound 1 indicates that the supramolecular double helices were constructed by stacking a P helix and an M helix in an antiparallel manner in the direction of intermolecular I⋅⋅⋅O-N halogen bonding.

Empathy, the ability to comprehend and share others' emotional states, impacts brain functions. This in vivo electrophysiological study explored the influence of chronic empathic stress on synaptic efficacy, as well as short-term and long-term plasticity at the Schaffer collateral/Commissural - CA1 synapses in the dorsal hippocampus of rats, in situations of social equality and inequality. Forty-eight male rats were randomized into six groups: control, pseudo-observer, pseudo-demonstrator, observer, demonstrator, and co-demonstrator (Co, Pse-Ob, Pse-De, Ob, De, Co-De) groups.
