Using 'classical' experimental protocols, a human phase-response curve (PRC) to a single 3-h bright light pulse has been established. When the light pulse was centred slightly before the time of body temperature minimum, the circadian system delayed, whilst a pulse slightly after the minimum advanced it. Maximum phase shifts were about 2 h. When light pulses over 3 successive cycles were used, larger shifts (4-7 h) were produced. It is concluded that the human PRC does not differ in principle from that found in other species, except with respect to the light intensity required.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects hair follicles in areas with apocrine sweat glands, such as the underarms, groin, and buttocks. The pathogenesis of HS is not fully understood, but considering the key role played by the biological clock in the control of immune/inflammatory processes the derangement of circadian and ultradian pathways could be hypothesized.
Methods: We analyzed genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in peripheral blood from 24 HS cases and 24 controls using the Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip array (Illumina), followed by bioinformatics and statistical analyses.

Phase Response Curves (PRCs) have been useful in determining and analyzing various phase-locking modes in networks of oscillators under pulse-coupling assumptions, as reviewed in Mathematical Biosciences, 226:77-96, 2010. Here, we update that review to include progress since 2010 on pulse coupled oscillators with conduction delays. We then present original results that extend the derivation of the criteria for stability of global synchrony in networks of pulse-coupled oscillators to include conduction delays.

The "infinitesimal phase response curve" (PRC) is a common tool used to analyze phase resetting in the natural sciences in general and neuroscience in particular. We make the observation that the PRC with respect to a coordinate v actually depends on the choice of other coordinates. As a consequence, a complete delay embedding reconstruction of the dynamics using v which would allow phase to be computed still does not allow the v PRC to be computed.
