The impact of IVIg on metastatic capacity of CT26 murine colon carcinoma cells was studied using in vitro and in vivo methods. IVIg inhibited CT26 cell proliferation and invasion through an extracellular matrix in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Systemic treatment of mice with IVIg significantly inhibited metastatic potential of CT26 colon carcinoma cells observed as tumor nodules and lung weight reduction. Treating CT26 cell-implanted rabbit corneas with IVIg led to shrinking and complete disappearance of tumor mass in 10 days. These results provide the evidence that IVIg may be considered as a supportive therapy for inhibition of colon carcinoma tumor spread.

Disrupting the interaction between matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) and syndecan-2 (SDC-2) can yield anticancer effects in colon cancer cells. Here, a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) targeting the pro-domain of MMP-7 was generated as a potential candidate anticancer agent. Among the generated scFvs, those designated 1B7 and 1C3 showed the strongest abilities to inhibit the ability of MMP-7 pro-domain to directly interact with SDC-2 in vitro and decrease the cancer activities of human HT29 colon adenocarcinoma cells.

Alkaloids and Nitrosamines in Betel Quid: A Biochemical Exploration of Carcinogenicity.

Chem Biol Interact

January 2025

Department of Community Dental Health, Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Gangodawila, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka.

Betel quid contains two major ingredients; Areca catechu and Piper betel, often consumed with slaked lime, tobacco, certain flavouring agents, colouring agents, herbs, and spices according to personal preferences. The areca nut alkaloids (arecoline, arecaidine, guvacine, and guvacoline), and tobacco alkaloids (nicotine, nor-nicotine) undergo nitrosation during chewing in the oral cavity with the presence of nitrite and thiocyanate and endogenously. Among the nitrosation products generated areca nut-derived nitrosamine (ADNA): 3-(methylnitrosamino) Propionitrile (MNPN) and the two tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs); N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone) (NNK) are considered Group 1 human carcinogens.

Long-term survival outcomes of laparoscopic surgery in patients with colorectal cancer: A propensity score matching retrospective cohort study.

Chin J Cancer Res

December 2024

Department of Colorectal Surgery, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/ Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100021, China.

Objective: Colorectal cancer (CRC) surgeries can be performed using either laparoscopic or open laparotomy approaches. However, the long-term outcomes based on tumor location and age remain unclear. This study compared the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic and laparotomy surgeries in patients with CRC, focusing on tumor location and age to identify suitable subgroups and determine an optimal cut-off age.

Background: Colorectal metastasis from primary breast cancer is rare and presents a challenge for diagnosis and treatment.

Aim: To report two cases of colorectal metastasis from a primary invasive lobular breast carcinoma (ILBC) with different presentations while discussing the mode of diagnosis, immunohistochemistry (IHC), course of treatment, and response.

Case 1: A 47-year-old female, with a known case of bilateral invasive lobular breast cancer, was diagnosed in 2015 and staged as p Tx N3 M0.

Background: CD3 bispecific antibody (CD3 bsAb) therapy has become an established treatment modality for some cancer types and exploits endogenous T cells irrespective of their specificity. However, durable clinical responses are hampered by immune escape through loss of tumor target antigen expression. Induction of long-lasting tumor-specific immunity might therefore improve therapeutic efficacy, but has not been studied in detail yet for CD3 bsAbs.
