Background: Bonding agents could be used as fissure sealants. This study compares the retention three fissure sealants (Delton, Delton Plus and Concise) and a filled dentin bonding system (Optibond Solo). METHODS. Fifty-six children aged 7-8 years received fissure sealants either in the four permanent first molars, in the four deciduous second molars, or in all eight of these teeth. Every child received a different sealing material in each quadrant on a random basis. Clinical evaluation at 12 months was performed by a single blind examiner, and the retention was classified as either a success (total retention) or a failure (partial retention or not present).

Results: There were no statistically significant differences among the four materials in permanent maxillary molars or deciduous molars. In permanent mandibular molars, Optibond Solo showed a lower percentage of retention (40.9%), significantly different (p=0.002) to that of Delton (89.5%), Delton Plus (87.5%) and Concise (76.5%).

Conclusion: One bottle dentin bonding system used as a sealant does not improve the retention of conventional fissure sealants.

Clinical Implication: Because of the scarcity of studies on the use of dental adhesives as sealants, further studies are warranted for the final support of that conclusion.

Background: Dental caries is one of the most common non-communicable diseases in humans. Various interventions are available for the management, of which microinvasive techniques such as infiltration, sealants, glass ionomers, are novel and convenient. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare microinvasive techniques with noninvasive or invasive treatment modalities in terms of effectiveness in halting interproximal caries lesion progression radiographically assessed.

Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the use, quality, and caries-preventive effects of fissure sealants (FSs) in 8- to 10-year-olds with and without molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH).

Materials And Methods: A total of 5,418 children (2,692 males, 2,726 females) were examined via standard instruments (dental mirrors, CPI probes, adequate lighting, mobile examination tables, and air syringes) and methods for the recording of caries (DMFT index, WHO method) and FSs. The classification of MIH followed the recommendations of the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (EAPD).

Article Synopsis
  • Untreated dental caries is a major health issue, and pit and fissure sealants (PFS) are used to prevent them.
  • This study looks at the use of PFS among Mexican adolescents aged 10-14 from 2005 to 2014 and its impact on the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index nationally.
  • Results showed low PFS use (1.57%) with no significant trend over the years, but there was a decrease in the DMFT index, which appeared unrelated to PFS usage.
