Relatively few studies have examined the ecological effects of group-selection timber harvesting, and nearly all have been short-term and have lacked experimental manipulations that allow pre- and posttreatment comparisons. We have been documenting the effects of a group-selection timber harvest on bird abundance in a Maine forest for 24 years (preharvest, 1983-1987; postharvest, 1988-2006). Here we characterized the trends in bird abundance over the first 20 years of the study in the managed and control halves of the 40-ha study area. Species responses to the group-selection harvest were idiosyncratic, but in general the mature-forest bird community was retained and species dependent on early successional habitat temporarily (

Elevated cancer incidence has been reported among World Trade Center (WTC)-exposed responders, with some incidence rate ratios (IRRs) varying over time. This study describes the influence that different reference populations have on relative cancer incidence and temporal trends. Participants from the WTC Combined Rescue/Recovery Cohort (n = 65,691) were observed between 1/1/2002 and 12/31/2015 using data obtained from 13 state cancer registries.

Bone regeneration is a multifaceted process involving the well-coordinated interaction of cellular functions such as the regulation of inflammation, the formation of new blood vessels, and the development of bone tissue. Bone regeneration is a multifaceted process involving the well-coordinated interplay of multiple cellular activities, such as inflammation control, blood vessel and bone tissue. Zhang developed a multifunctional hydrogel system embedded with bone marrow stromal cell-derived exosomes to address the challenges of large bone defects.

The older population is susceptible to dementia, Alzheimer's and depression. A growing elderly population poses a burden on caregivers and society. If their cognitive and psychological health is maintained, they may not need to depend on others for their needs, thereby reducing the burden on caregivers.

Survival outcomes of lymph node dissection in early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer: identifying suitable candidates.

World J Surg Oncol

November 2024

Department of Gynaecology, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, 998 Aiying Street, Songbei District, 150023, Harbin, HeiLongjiang, P.R. China.

Objective: The study aimed to assess the effect of lymph node dissection on survival outcomes in patients presenting with early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer and to delineate patient characteristics that may indicate a greater benefit from pelvic lymph node dissection.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on individuals diagnosed with clinical stage I-II epithelial ovarian cancer who received primary cytoreductive surgery at the Cancer Hospital Affiliated with Harbin Medical University from January 1, 2010, to January 1, 2018. The investigation encompassed an examination of demographic data, clinicopathological profiles, perioperative complications, and survival outcomes.

Cooperation is the cornerstone of social stability and human development. In order to promote mutual cooperation among individuals, some researchers analyzed the important factors influencing individual behavior from the perspective of group selection, while others revealed the evolutionary mechanism of cooperative behavior in groups from the perspective of network reciprocity. However, group selection and network reciprocity actually work together and simultaneously drive individuals to cooperate with each other.
