Unraveling the genetic mechanisms of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy has opened new possibilities for future targeted medical therapy of the disease. Until these possibilities mature, regenerative semi-surgical approaches by cell injection or cell sheet transfer could help expand the donor pool, and possibly enable autologous transplantation. Descemet membrane stripping alone and acellular Descemet membrane transfer are more immediate surgical approaches that could be temporary treatments in some patients, though there is a lack of understanding of the factors that predict success for these procedures.

Hybrid solar cells based on organometal halide perovskite absorbers have recently emerged as promising class for cost- and energy-efficient photovoltaics. So far, unraveling the morphology of the different materials within the nanostructured absorber layer has not been accomplished. Here, we present the first visualization of the mesoporous absorber layer in a perovskite solar cell from analytical transmission electron microscopy studies.

Blood vessel development is a vital process during embryonic development, during tissue growth, regeneration and disease processes in the adult. In the past decade researchers have begun to unravel basic molecular mechanisms that regulate the formation of vascular lumen, sprouting angiogenesis, fusion of vessels, and pruning of the vascular plexus. The understanding of the biology of these angiogenic processes is increasingly driven through studies on vascular development at the cellular resolution.

Reaction mechanisms and associated free energies of various reaction steps involved in the Wacker process in aqueous acidic conditions at high Cl(-) concentration were investigated using accelerated ab initio molecular dynamics techniques. Several ligand exchange reactions of the catalytic precursor [PdCl(4)](2-) and nucleophilic attack of water at Pd-coordinated ethene (hydroxypalladation) were looked at in great molecular level detail. This work underlines the key role of the trans effect of Pd-coordinated ethene in the structure and dynamics of solvated Pd(II) complexes.
