Mapping subcortical brain lesions, behavioral and acoustic analysis for early assessment of subacute stroke patients with dysarthria.

Front Neurosci

January 2025

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory of Human-Machine Intelligence-Synergy Systems, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen, China.

Introduction: Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder frequently associated with subcortical damage. However, the precise roles of the subcortical nuclei, particularly the basal ganglia and thalamus, in the speech production process remain poorly understood.

Methods: The present study aimed to better understand their roles by mapping neuroimaging, behavioral, and speech data obtained from subacute stroke patients with subcortical lesions.

Hydroxyapatite, renowned for its biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties, plays a fundamental role in bone regeneration owing to its resemblance to natural bone mineral, thus offering considerable potential for advancing tissue engineering strategies. In this article, the innovative integration of silicon ions into biogenic (bovine-derived) hydroxyapatite (SiBHA) via a tailored sol-gel process is reported. The resultant SiBHA scaffolds exhibited an interconnected microporous structure with a total porosity of 70% and pore dimensions ranging from 120 to 650 µm.

Evaluating cutinase from Fusarium oxysporum as a biocatalyst for the degradation of nine synthetic polymer.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Laboratório de Planejamento e Desenvolvimento de Fármacos, Instituto de Ciências Exatas e Naturais, Universidade Federal do Pará, Belém, Pará, 66075-110, Brazil.

Plastic poses a significant environmental impact due to its chemical resilience, leading to prolonged and degradation times and resulting in widespread adverse effects on global flora and fauna. Cutinases are essential enzymes in the biodegradation process of synthetic polymers like polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which recognized organisms can break down. Here, we used molecular dynamics and binding free energy calculations to explore the interaction of nine synthetic polymers, including PET, with Cutinase from Fusarium oxysporum (FoCut).

Scaling and networking a modular photonic quantum computer.

Nature

January 2025

Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc., Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Photonics offers a promising platform for quantum computing, owing to the availability of chip integration for mass-manufacturable modules, fibre optics for networking and room-temperature operation of most components. However, experimental demonstrations are needed of complete integrated systems comprising all basic functionalities for universal and fault-tolerant operation. Here we construct a (sub-performant) scale model of a quantum computer using 35 photonic chips to demonstrate its functionality and feasibility.
