Published: October 2007

A concise, seven step synthesis of the aryl tetralin lignan lactone epi-picropodophyllin from piperonal is described. The key steps are a silene diene Diels-Alder reaction and the Hosomi-Sakurai reaction of the resultant silacyclohexene.

Article Synopsis
  • A detailed metabolite profiling of a medicinal plant using UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS was performed for the first time, identifying 71 compounds, mostly flavonoids, triterpene glycosides, and ecdysteroids.
  • The compounds schaftoside, 26-hydroxyecdysone, and silviridoside were highlighted as important markers for evaluating preparation quality.
  • The methanol extract demonstrated cytotoxic and Wnt pathway-inhibiting effects against triple-negative breast cancer, identifying 2-Deoxy-20-hydroxyecdysone as potent, while the presence of a hydroxyl group at C-2 in ecdysteroids was linked to reduced cytotoxicity against cancer cells.

The aim of this work was to show the potential of multidimensional gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry and suitable chemometrics means based on untargeted and profiling data analysis to strengthen the information provided by floral scent and nectar fatty acids of four genetically differentiated lineages (E1, W1, W2, and W3) of the nocturnal moth-pollinated herb Silene nutans. Volatile organic compounds emitted by flowers were trapped for a total of 42 samples by in-vivo sampling dynamic head space for analysing floral scent by untargeted approach, while 37 samples of nectar were collected for analysing fatty acids through profiling analysis. The resulting data from floral scent analysis were aligned and compared using a tile-based methodology followed by data mining to access high-level information.

For the past few years, two-dimensional materials have attracted widespread attention owing to their special properties and potential applications. It is well-known that graphene, transition metal disulfide compounds (TMDC), carbon nitride, transition metal carbonitrides (Mxenes), silene and hexagonal boron nitride are typical two-dimensional materials. Compared with these traditional two-dimensional materials, two-dimensional MOF is favored by numerous researchers because of its unique structure.

Exposed surfaces following glacial retreat are ideal field laboratories for studying primary vegetation succession. Many related studies based on ground sampling methods have been performed worldwide in proglacial zones, but studies on species diversity and vegetation succession using aerial photography have been rare. In this study, we investigated soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), plant species diversity, and fractional vegetation cover (FVC) along a chronosequence within the foreland of Urumqi Glacier No.

Changes in the environment as a result of industrialisation and urbanisation impact negatively on plant growth and crop production. Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most dangerous metals that enters the food chain, with toxic effects on plants and human health. This study evaluated the potential of Silene sendtneri as a novel hyperaccumulator and the role of seed priming in tolerance and accumulation rate of Cd.
