Objective: To determine the genetic relationships between different Vibrio cholerae isolates in Shenzhen from 1993 to 2002.

Methods: Chromosomal DNA from 60 isolates was digested in seakem gold agrose with restriction enzyme Not I and plugs were then analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns of V. cholerae isolates were clustered using BioNumerics software.

Results: 39 distinctive PFGE patterns were identified with each pattern having 20 to 30 bands. Most PFGE patterns were divided into cluster A or cluster B.

Conclusion: The closely related pandemic clone clusters of V. cholerae strains did exist in Shenzhen. PFGE of V. cholerae could be used for active surveillance and tracking for cholerae.

Evaluation of MALDI-TOF for identification of Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus from growth on agar media.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Vibrio Reference Laboratory, Bureau of Microbial Hazards, Health Canada, Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Two methods were compared for their ability to accurately identify Vibrio species of interest: whole genome sequencing as the reference method and MALDI-TOF MS (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry) proteome fingerprinting. The accuracy of mass spectrometry-based identification method was evaluated for its ability to accurately identify isolates of Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Identification result of each isolate obtained by mass spectrometry was compared to identification by whole genome sequencing (WGS).

Cholera is linked to penury, making low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) particularly vulnerable to outbreaks. In this systematic review, we analyzed the drivers contributing to these outbreaks, focusing on the epidemiology of cholera in LMICs. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024591613).

Background: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is already being adopted for the surveillance of health conditions of communities and shows great potential for the monitoring of infectious pathogens of public health importance. There is however paucity of robust data to support extensive WBE in Nigeria. This study evaluated the prevalence of clinically relevant infectious pathogens and provided antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria pathogens in wastewater canals in Lagos State at a single point in time.

Background: Diarrhea caused by non-O1/O139-group e (NOVC) tends to be mild and can be readily overlooked. In this report, a NOVC strain designated XXM was isolated from the blood of a 68-year-old male undergoing surgical treatment for a bile duct malignancy in October 2023.

Methods: XXM was identified through a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS).

Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) strains are a distinct group of Vibrio cholerae that do not cause epidemic cholera. NOVC infections usually cause mild forms of gastroenteritis, and rarely severe (extra)intestinal infections, mostly affecting immunocompromised patients. Here, we describe the clinical course of a patient with NOVC bacteremia causing multiple liver abscesses, after drinking from a freshwater well in a non-coastal area.
