The MKN45 cell line, a type of gastric cancer cell, exhibits resistance to chemotherapy agents through various mechanisms. Curcumin and noscapine, two plant-derived anticancer compounds, exhibit selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells. However, their bioavailability is poor both in vitro and in vivo.

A series of semisynthetic noscapine-urea congeners (7a-7h) as potential tubulin-binding agents are being developed by integrating a urea pharmacophore at the C-9 position of the noscapine scaffold. Their binding affinity to tubulin was predicted through molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and the MM-PBSA approach. These molecules were subsequently chemically synthesized and assessed using breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and normal human embryonic kidney cells (HEK).

This review aims to summarize the role of alkaloids as potential modulators of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR (PAMT) pathway in cancer therapy. The PAMT pathway plays a critical role in cell growth, survival, and metabolism, and its dysregulation contributes to cancer hallmarks. In healthy cells, this pathway is tightly controlled.

Disorders of gallbladder motility can lead to serious pathology. Bitter tastants acting upon bitter taste receptors (TAS2R family) have been proposed as a novel class of smooth muscle relaxants to combat excessive contraction in the airways and other organs. To explore whether this might also emerge as an option for gallbladder diseases, we here tested bitter tastants for relaxant properties and profiled Tas2r expression in the mouse gallbladder.

Among plant-derived secondary metabolites are benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) that play a vital role in medicine. The most conspicuous BIAs frequently found in opium poppy are morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine, sanguinarine, and noscapine. BIAs have provided abundant clinically useful drugs used in the treatment of various diseases and ailments With an increasing demand for these herbal remedies, genetic improvement of poppy plants appears to be essential to live up to the expectations of the pharmaceutical industry.
