Published: October 2007

Two new sesquineolignans, Furfuraceol A (1) and Furfuraceol B (2), have been isolated from the flowers of Centaurea furfuracea as a mixture of two isomers. Their structures have been determined by spectroscopic methods including 2D NMR spectroscopy COSY, HMQC, HMBC and NOESY.

An extensive study was undertaken using the petals of cornflower (Centaurea cyanus (Cyani flos)) flowers in yogurt production as a source of dietary fiber and antioxidant compounds, and as a natural dye, taking into account a 21-d refrigerated storage period. An additional aim of the study was to use cornflower petals in natural form rather than an extract. Four forms of cornflower petals: fresh, dried, frozen, and freeze-dried, were tested.

Evaluation of some garden flowers as specialty cut flowers in Eskisehir province-Türkiye.

Altinbilek Agricultural Products Licensed Warehousing Inc., Eskişehir, Türkiye.

Specialty cut flowers are in demand, especially in the domestic market as they can be grown with low production costs without the need for specially equipped greenhouses and offer diversity in terms of form, texture, and colour. These products, which are widely cultivated in the USA, are not well known in Türkiye. One of the main problems of the Turkish cut flower sector is its dependence on foreign inputs and the lack of product diversity.

Plants demonstrate exceptional variation in genome size across species, and their genome sizes can also vary dramatically across individuals and populations within species. This aspect of genetic variation can have consequences for traits and fitness, but few studies attributed genome size differentiation to ecological and evolutionary processes. Biological invasions present particularly useful natural laboratories to infer selective agents that might drive genome size shifts across environments and population histories.
