Published: November 2007

Two large British databases of handedness assessed by writing hand at 10-11 years of age were analysed by geographical region. Left-handedness was found to vary significantly across regions according to one survey but not the other. In both data sets, left-handed writing was significantly more frequent in England than in Scotland and Wales combined. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed.

Supramolecular chirality has gained immense attention for great potential, in which the rational engineering strategy facilitates unique helical stacking/assembly, high chiroptical behavior, and prime biomedical activity. In this study, we reported a novel chiral organic donor-acceptor cocrystal based on asymmetrical components of benzo()naphtho(1,2-)thiophene (BNT) and 9-oxo-9H-indeno(1,2-)pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile (DCAF) that exhibited red emission using a simple solution approach. During the self-assembly, a kinetically controlled growth of polar solvent or substrate induction led to the chiral packing and helical morphology twisted by the cooperation of electrostatic potential energy and chirality.

School of Physical Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University, 393 Huaxia Middle Rd. Pudong, Shanghai, 201210, P. R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Plasmonic nanoparticle-based chiral materials utilize strong light-matter interaction and tunable resonance frequencies but face challenges in dynamic modulation of their chiroptical properties.
  • Researchers created chiral assemblies using gold nanospheres (AuNSs) through mechanical-induced surface buckling, resulting in a unique "S-shaped" 3D structure that enhances circular dichroism (CD) responses.
  • This method allows for reversible adjustments in CD signal magnitude and handedness, presenting opportunities for advanced applications in information encryption and paving the way for new design strategies in chiral optical materials.

Circularly polarized light (CPL) is inherently chiral and is regarded as one possible source for the origin of homochirality. Coincidentally, chiral metal nanoparticles have great prospects in asymmetric photochemical reactions since they can enhance the chiral light-matter interactions. Nonetheless, little is known about how the spin angular momentum of light competes with the chiral electromagnetic field in the vicinity of a chiral nanoparticle during the chiral induction and amplification process.

Excitation-Dependent Circularly Polarized Luminescence Inversion Driven by Dichroic Competition of Achiral Dyes in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

November 2024

School of Energy, Materials and Chemical Engineering, Hefei University, Hefei, 230601, Anhui Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The development of stimuli-responsive chiral cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) is crucial for creating advanced 3D anti-counterfeiting and multi-level encryption technologies, yet challenges remain in achieving fast and easy fabrication of phototunable systems.
  • - Researchers introduced a new material called excitation-dependent CLCs (ExD-CLCs) that utilizes two contrasting achiral dyes to create a dynamic photoresponsive effect, resulting in a reversible change in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals with varying light excitation.
  • - The successful modulation of CPL signals through this dichroic competition allows the ExD-CLCs to be utilized for sophisticated anti-counterfeiting techniques, demonstrating potential applications in secure information encoding.

Chiral organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites offer a promising platform for developing non-linear chiro-optical applications and chiral-induced spin selectivity. Here, we show that achiral hybrid perovskites that have highly ordered ferroelectric domains with orthogonal polarization exhibit planar chirality, as manifested by second harmonic generation with strong circular dichroism. Interestingly, the handedness of the second harmonic generation circular dichroism response can be alternatingly switched between orthogonally polarized domains and domain walls.
