Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of laparoscopic uterosacral nerve (LUNA) alone vs. LUNA plus presacral neurectomy (PN) in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.
Study Design: Seventy-four patients were randomly allocated to LUNA alone or LUNA plus PN. Evaluation of severity of menstrual pain was based on multidimensional scoring.
Results: Sixty-seven patients were eligible for analysis (35 LUNA alone, 32 LUNA plus PN). Baseline demographic features were comparable between the 2 groups. There was no difference between them in the proportion of improvement in dysmenorrhea at 3 months of follow-up (69% for LUNA vs. 73% for LUNA plus PN, p = 0.923), and the results were maintained at 6 and 12 months of follow-up. More surgical complications were found in the LUNA plus PN group.
Conclusion: For patients with primary dysmenorrhea, LUNA plus PN has no additive therapeutic advantage over LUNA alone, and more surgical complications may be encountered.

This study updates knowledge on historical geographic distribution of sand fly species through identifying altitudinal and bioclimatic patterns in leishmaniasis endemic areas in Mexico. We analyze and identify sand fly specimens obtained through national efforts by the Instituto de Diagnóstico y Referencia Epidemiológicos (InDRE, Mexico), collected between 1995 and 2001, 2008-2012, and 2017-2023, and add bibliographic information (427 additional records). After a principal components analysis of WorldClim variables and altitudinal ranges, variables that better explain the distribution of sand fly species were chosen (BIO6, BIO12, and BIO16, explaining 72 % of variation).

Cholesterol-7-alpha hydroxylase (CYP7A1) is a key enzyme in the synthesis of bile salts, and its activity can contribute to determining cholesterol levels and, consequently, the risk of developing coronary atherosclerotic disease. We evaluated whether seven (rs3808607 , rs9297994 , rs10504255 , rs8192870 , rs2081687 , rs1457043 and rs10107182 polymorphisms located in the promoter and enhancer regions of the gene, which have not been sufficiently explored, are candidates of risk markers of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the Mexican population. These polymorphisms were determined in a group of 1317 patients with ACS and 1046 control subjects.

The interleukin-17 (IL-17) has a crucial role during inflammation and has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, but its role in epigenetics is still poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the DNA methylation status of the gene promoter to establish whether it may represent a risk factor for subclinical atherosclerosis (SA) or clinical coronary artery disease (CAD). We included 38 patients with premature CAD (pCAD), 48 individuals with SA, and 43 healthy controls.

(1) Background: Previous studies have enriched high-density lipoproteins (HDL) using cholesteryl esters in rabbits with a three-quarter reduction in functional renal mass, suggesting that the kidneys participate in the cholesterol homeostasis of these lipoproteins. However, the possible role of the kidneys in lipoprotein metabolism is still controversial. To understand the role of the kidneys in regulating the HDL lipid content, we determined the turnover of HDL-cholesteryl esters in rabbits with a three-quarter renal mass reduction.

High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are known to enhance vascular function through different mechanisms, including the delivery of functional lipids to endothelial cells. Therefore, we hypothesized that omega-3 (n-3) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of HDLs would improve the beneficial vascular effects of these lipoproteins. To explore this hypothesis, we performed a placebo-controlled crossover clinical trial in 18 hypertriglyceridemic patients without clinical symptoms of coronary heart disease who received highly purified EPA 460 mg and DHA 380 mg, twice a day for 5 weeks or placebo.
