Key limitations of the colloidal semiconductor nanorods that have been reported so far are a significant distribution of lengths and diameters as well as the presence of irregular shapes produced by the current synthetic routes and, finally, the poor ability to fabricate large areas of oriented nanorod arrays. Here, we report a seeded-growth approach to the synthesis of asymmetric core-shell CdSe/CdS nanorods with regular shapes and narrow distributions of rod diameters and lengths, the latter being easily tunable up to 150 nm. These rods are highly fluorescent and show linearly polarized emission, whereby the emission energy depends mainly on the core diameter. We demonstrate their lateral alignment as well as their vertical self-alignment on substrates up to areas of several square micrometers.

High performance and high stability in all-inorganic solution processed nanocrystal-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are highly attractive for large area devices compared to organic material-based LEDs. In this work, an inverted all-inorganic LED structure is designed to have an easy integration with thin-film transistors. Adopting robust inorganic materials such as Ni O nanoparticle films as a hole transport layer (HTL) is beneficial for the performance of LED.

We present CdSe@CdS nanorods coated with a redox-active polydopamine (PDA) layer functionalized with cobaloxime-derived photocatalysts for efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution in aqueous environments. The PDA-coating provides reactive groups for the functionalization of the nanorods with different molecular catalysts, facilitates charge separation and transfer of electrons from the excited photosensitizer to the catalyst, and reduces photo-oxidation of the photosensitizer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the successful functionalization of the nanorods with cobalt-based catalysts, whereas the catalyst loading per nanorod is quantified by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF).

In the past two decades, the application of colloidal semiconductor-metal nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts for the hydrogen generation from water has been extensively studied. The present body of literature studies agrees that the photocatalytic yield strongly depends on the electron donating agent (EDA) added for scavenging the photogenerated holes. The highest reported hydrogen production rates are obtained in the presence of ionic EDAs and at high pH.

In recent years, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to the investigation of CdSe/CdS-based quantum-confined nanostructures, driven by their distinctive properties. The morphologies of these nanostructures have been shown to directly affect their properties, an area which has proven to be an important field of study. Herein, we report a new morphology of CdSe/CdS core-shell heterostructures in the form of a 'nanonail' - a modified nanorod-like morphology, in which a distinctive triangular head can be observed at one end of the structure.

The external quantum efficiency (EQE) in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on isotropic quantum dots has approached the theoretical limit of close to 20%. Anisotropic nanorods can break this limit by taking advantage of their directional emission. However, the progress towards higher EQE by using CdSe/CdS nanorods (NRs) faces several challenges, primarily involving the low quantum yield and unbalanced charge injection in devices.
