Hairy polyps are benign embryological tumors of the head and neck region that are derived from two germinal layers, the ectoderm and mesoderm. At an incidence of 1 : 40000, hairy polyps are considered rare growths. Presenting symptoms of hairy polyps can vary greatly depending on the size and location of the tumor.

While it is known that a large fraction of vertebrate genes are under the control of a gene regulatory network (GRN) forming a clock with circadian periodicity, shorter period oscillatory genes like the Hairy-enhancer-of split (Hes) genes are discussed mostly in connection with the embryonic process of somitogenesis. They form the core of the somitogenesis-clock, which orchestrates the periodic separation of somites from the presomitic mesoderm (PSM). The formation of sharp boundaries between the blocks of many cells works only when the oscillators in the cells forming the boundary are synchronized.

Spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) consist of a rigid core on which polyelectrolyte chains are grafted in such a way that in certain conditions (low ionic strength and high charge of the chains) the polymer chains extend radially toward the liquid medium. Because of the hairy-like structure of the polymer brushes, the typical soft-particle approach used for explaining the behavior of polyelectrolyte-coated particles must be modified, using the assumptions that the density of charged segments in the polymer chains decreases with the squared distance to the rigid core surface and that the same happens to the friction between the brushes and the surrounding fluid. Interest in clarifying the electrokinetics of these systems is not just academic.

Major therapeutic progress has been accomplished in leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) over the past 40 years, which may not be fully appreciated by the larger medical community. The objective of this review was to briefly highlight the treatment breakthroughs in leukemia and MDS. Therapeutic progress happened through better understanding of disease pathophysiologies and rational development of targeted agents, like imatinib mesylate in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and through astute, empirical discoveries in the clinic, like all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) and chlorodeoxyadenosine in hairy cell leukemia (HCL).

Somitogenesis is the key developmental step, which divides the vertebrate body axis into segmentally repeated structures. It requires an intricate process of pre-patterning, which is driven by an oscillator mechanism consisting of the Delta-Notch pathway and various hairy- and Enhancer of split-related (her) genes. The subset of her genes, which are necessary to set up the segmentation clock, reveal a complex scenario of interactions.
