To obtain diagnostic antibodies to neomycin, immunogenic properties of the neomycin conjugates with macromolecular carriers were studied. Bovine serum albumin and copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone with crotonic acid and N-hydroxyphthalimide ether of crotonic acid were used as carriers. It was shown that immunization of mice by the conjugates in combination with Freund's adjuvant resulted in production of neomycin antibodies, the titer being 1/80 to 1/130. When the antibiotic conjugates with the copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone were used and not the neomycin conjugates with the carrier of the protein nature, the neomycin antibodies were produced in the absence of Freund's full adjuvant. With the use of the isolated antibodies to neomycin a method for indirect solid phase enzyme immunoassay of neomycin was developed at the minimum detectable level of 25 ng/ml.

The study examined the possibility of intercalation of montmorillonite with neomycin in an aqueous drug solution and the factors influencing the effectiveness of this process, such as the ion exchange capacity and process conditions, including the time and temperature of incubation with the drug. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (DSC/TG), and Zeta potential measurement were used to confirm drug intercalation as well as to investigate the nature of clay-drug interactions. The obtained conjugates with the most favorable physicochemical properties were also tested for antibacterial response against Gram-negative bacteria () to confirm that the bactericidal properties of neomycin were retained after intercalation and UV-VIS spectrophotometry was used to examine the kinetics of drug release from the carrier.

Objectives: Resistance genes can be genetically transmitted and exchanged between commensal and pathogenic bacterial species, and in different compartments including the environment, or human and animal guts (One Health concept). The aim of our study was to evaluate whether subdosages of antibiotics administered in veterinary medicine could enhance plasmid transfer and, consequently, resistance gene exchange in gut microbiota.
Methods: Conjugation frequencies were determined with Escherichia coli strains carrying IncL- (blaOXA-48) or IncI1-type (blaCTX-M-1) plasmids subjected to a series of subinhibitory concentrations of antibiotics used in veterinary medicine, namely amoxicillin, ceftiofur, apramycin, neomycin, enrofloxacin, colistin, erythromycin, florfenicol, lincomycin, oxytetracycline, sulfamethazine, tiamulin and the ionophore narasin.
