Two-phase mixtures of gasoline, water, and ethanol were dehydrated with both starch and saponified starch-g-polyacrylonitrile (HSPAN). Whereas starch absorbed ethanol as well as water, HSPAN selectively absorbed the water component, allowing ethanol to dissolve in the gasoline phase.

The global aim to move away from fossil fuels requires efficient, inexpensive and sustainable energy storage to fully use renewable energy sources. Thermal energy storage materials in combination with a Carnot battery could revolutionize the energy storage sector. However, a lack of stable, inexpensive and energy-dense thermal energy storage materials impedes the advancement of this technology.

A facile, green, and economical method for the scalable synthesis of hydrophilic copper-triazole metal-organic frameworks (Cu-trz) is demonstrated. Numerous open metal sites within the highly crystalline porous structure of Cu-trz are generated through mild thermal activation, enabling its application in liquid-phase ethanol dehydration under ambient conditions. The frameworks with distinct crystallinity and particle sizes were achieved by modifying the synthesis process.

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations provide more avenues for phase transitions, which have piqued great interest in crystal engineering. In this work, a 3D Co(II)-based coordination polymer (CP), (1), (where (btec) = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate) undergoes SCSC transition upon heating at 180 °C to afford an anhydrous phase (1'). Room-temperature water-vapour induced semi-reversible SCSC transformation of 1' involves condensation of two water molecules coordinating to the metal cluster, yielding a new framework (2).

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that exhibit dynamic phase-transition behavior under external stimuli could have great potential in adsorptive separations. Here we report on a zinc-based microporous MOF (JNU-80) and its reversible transformation between two crystalline phases: large pore (JNU-80-LP) and narrow pore (JNU-80-NP). Specifically, JNU-80-LP can undergo a dehydration-induced cluster consolidation under heat treatment, resulting in JNU-80-NP with a reduced channel that allows exclusion of di-branched hexane isomers while high adsorption of linear and mono-branched hexane isomers.

A high soluble and stable ɛ-Zn(OH) precursor is synthesized at below room temperature to efficiently prepare ZnO whiskers. The experimental results indicate that the formation of ZnO whiskers is carried out mainly via two steps: the formation of ZnO seeds from ɛ-Zn(OH) via the in situ solid conversion, and the following growth of whiskers via dissolution-precipitation route. The decrease of temperature from 25 to 5 °C promotes the formation of ɛ-Zn(OH) with higher solubility and stability, which balances the conversion and dissolution rates of precursor.
