Severe diarrheal infections caused by Shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli O103:H2:stx(1):eae-epsilon:ehx, O145:H28:stx(1):eae-gamma:ehx (two cases in a family), and O174:H21:stx(2c) in farm residents were traced to cattle. Molecular methods were applied to the isolation and characterization of the strains. The causative strains were also isolated from cattle samples 1 or 4 months later.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the presence and genomic traits of harmful E. coli strains in raw and ready-to-eat mussels, focusing on their impact on public health regarding virulence and resistance to antibiotics.
  • Genome analysis identified a strain (23EM) with both nonpathogenic and pathogenic features and a high likelihood of being a human pathogen, along with various virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance genes.
  • The findings stress the need for continuous monitoring of E. coli in mussels to mitigate health risks linked to their consumption, highlighting the importance of food safety measures.

Oedema disease (OD) in weaned piglets is caused by shigatoxigenic (STEC), which produces the Stx2e toxin. The disease is controlled by early vaccination (for example, with Ecoporc Shiga). Iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) and cystoisosporosis are the most common clinical conditions in piglets.

Background: Compounds of natural origin are potent source of drugs with unique mechanisms of action. Among phytochemicals, trans-cinnamaldehyde (t-CA) exhibits a wide range of biological activity, thus has been used for centuries to fight bacterial and fungal infections. However, the molecular basis of these properties has not been fully covered.

The emerging heteropathotype shigatoxigenic (STEC) and extra-intestinal pathogenic (ExPEC) O80:H2 has been the second leading cause of pediatric HUS in France since the mid-2010s. In contrast with other highly pathogenic STEC serotypes, for which ruminants have clearly been identified as the main human infection source, this heteropathotype's reservoir remains unknown. In this context, we describe for the first time the isolation of seven STEC O80:H2 strains from healthy cattle on a single cattle farm in France.

Shiga toxin-producing are zoonotic pathogens that cause food-borne human disease. Among these, the O157:H7 serotype has evolved from an enteropathogenic O55:H7 ancestor through the displacement of the somatic gene cluster and recurrent toxigenic conversion by Shiga toxin-converting bacteriophages. However, atypical strains that lack the Shiga toxin, the characteristic virulence hallmark, are circulating in this lineage.
